Discussion about
I am very confused... is RE still a good investment? FWIW, I just can't wait for Sam Miller's data... can we say "capitulate" data on NYC RE and by extension LIC?

The problem w/ being married to a day trader.... r we on, off or threesome?... never can tell what the nite brings :)

I can't wait till RE just becomes a "home" again.... and doesn't require Option ARMS and a Phd to figure out.....those were the days.

"dune"?

oh CC, just looking at a J29... a fractional rig w/ inboard diesel at ask $24K... yeh, that's like the opening bid on a $3MM a bdrm in FIDI, but do you like this sailboat? I'm looking to upgrade from a ericson 23... it's way too small beyond 3 on-board.... believe me, you have way more experience than I on this :)

trying to remember if i was on a a j27 or j29? the one i was on had an outboard with a tiller. very, very sweet boat to sail. cabin was tight but servicable. i don't think you can go wrong with a j anything frankly.

have an acquaintance with a j120 that he only uses to day sail---now you're talking. a lot of owners groups on the net for j--check them out.

enjoy.

thxs... yep, (the tiller / outboard is for "hard core", me thinkz) trying to figure out if I'm gonna do some racing.... this might just fit my slip, it's a little beam(ie), but LOA is just right.... one time I was stuck w/ a puttering outboard... and swore never again... this way I can just add a small honda outboard for emergencies (might be over-kill), but with small kids on board, I'm leaving nothing to chance :)

w67 - when all else fails, get yourself on yahoo finance or bloomberg and download some charts. while you're at it, you might want to post a few of them on SE so that people can point out how clueless you are. only then will you understand the mad market genius that is (was?) ericho.

ah, outboards. reminds me of my experience with pressure washers. absolutely, never, ever start when you need them. and--I had one with a honda engine to boot. have read about electric motors on much larger sailboats...wonder if anyone has gotten anywhere with an electric outboard. carrying the battery back and forth is probably impractical and charging at the dock is just another hassle.

sidelinesittter :), I hope you have nice cushions... this mkt is taking forever to thaw (NYC RE), the equity mkt...not so slow...

CC, yeah... the outboard puttered dead right as we were pulling in to docks, in my inexperience/excitement... juiced the throttle and probably flooded the damn thing... I'm cranking on this thing as the sailboat is slowly floating towards other docked boats.... luckily it was small enough a guy threw a line and I was able to avoid disaster... but I guess the electric is just for docking purposes...

hey, don't feel bad in the least...have had that particular pleasure numerous times---best of which was when i was selling a boat and took couple for demo sail and stupid outboard died---as did my deal. kind of like blowing the circuit breakers in your apartment during a showing.

w67 - hope it was clear that the "you" in "how clueless you are" was ericho, not you. your response was so random (your unique charm!) that I can't tell.

Hey W67th, with all the money you're making by not buying real estate what are you doing pissing around with a beat up old J29?? At least bump it up to a 105. You'll thank me later.

spinnaker1 ( was that you that made the comment about our thoughts should be w/ the Iranians at this time?, have to agree wholeheartedly w/ that... itz crazy to think two of the world's most backward regimes may turn into Democracies in a 10 yr span, but there will be alot of bloodshed I fear)...

I've seen 3 yo boats that look like crap and I've seen 30 yo boats that I wouldn't worry about taking around Hawaii, it's amazing what maintenance will do, but I'll take your advice and looksie into a 105... :)

w67th - Things in Iran are hitting a little close to home right now. Without some unprecedented internal shift at the top I'm afraid many of those passionate, well educated kids may never make it home. Fascinating to watch the history being played out there.

Ok boats... if you like the go fast stuff there's a little X-99 out in Oyster Bay for sale right now that looks pretty sweet (more of a Euro thing though). So many boats so little time. I would stick to newer racers if that's your thing. They really do get trashed -especially after 20 yrs or so. Unless of course you find that rare deal of a pampered toy.

stick with your j29---if it's in good shape and there are many that have been not been beaten to death, a ton more bang for the buck. i checked--that was the boat i was on---nice big cockpit---feels like a dinghy.

its so funny how just last week, with Dow near 9000, so many were absolutely behind the rally and convinced that all was better again. 7 days later, ooooops. Most people who trade or follow markets have severe case of ADD. Stocks are not rational, yet people constantly think the stock market is always right and always signaling where things are headed. Umm, no! Stocks can be very very wrong, and they have been twice so far in past 18 months (late 2007, Summer 2008). Yet stocks are what people use to gauge the health of the economy, so if stocks rally regardless of where we came from, all is well again. If stocks fall, is is bad again. Nice roller coaster for your emotions

The market has been taken over by traders right now. I remember the day when technical trading was mocked, and now, because there is so much of it, it becomes self-fulfilling. Real Estate, in NYC, started to get taken over by traders, but alot of them are taking a bath, and liquidity is an entirely different ballgame. Once we get back to a home being a home, prices will come inline with income. We have a ways to go

Well said.

Unfortunately, many can use the stock market fluctuations to tell any story they want. And I'm sure every broker in this city (except Noah, of course) is using it to try and sell condos.

But prices need to get back to equlibrium one way or another, this is likely just delaying the inevitable, possibly making it more painful.
