I don't even know the words to describe how evil and self-serving the teachers' union is.

Very scary. I hope this is bloomberg playing tough with the teacher's union and that it will all work out. Otherwise, as a mom with two little ones, I would have serious reservations about paying PS87 prices if the school does not have the teachers aides.

And btw, this is clearly all about Boston Bloomberg horse-trading for the union's endorsement for Banana Republican re-coronation. Expect lots more like it.

^^I would have serious reservations about paying the premium price for a 3 bedroom apartment in PS87.^^ Family size apartments in PS87 seem to be higher than family size apartments in the school district just to the north (which is just as lovely an area to live).

You're right that PS87 is probably a factor in that, but even before PS87 became a standout school, that neighborhood was much more 'intact' and pricier than the area north of it.

as a parent of a child in PS 290 I am sick over this. while the aids to not teach - they are invaluable in keeping the class "ticking". my son had 24 children in his kindergarten class this year - and there were no problems with the size because of the fabulous aide that was there to keep things together

Look at this crock of shit...

"And education officials and union leaders say that the informal system of hiring teaching assistants that has sprouted up over the past decade raised security concerns because it was not necessarily subject to the city’s screening process. “It’s hurting our union members, and to some extent it could be hurting kids because we don’t know how qualified they are,” said Ron Davis, a spokesman for the United Federation of Teachers, which filed a grievance in October about the hiring."

Yes, lets put 'em through the "screening process" that got us the lousy teachers in the first place! The fantastic system that takes 50 steps to get rid of a bad teacher, and keeps the teachers who sexually harass students on the payroll!

Yes, please!!!!!!!!

i love it... the more expensive union folks will be LESS QUALIFIED!!!

"The system was so successful, according to parents, that it evolved into a training ground for future teachers: At least half of last year’s assistants had graduate degrees in education and New York State teaching licenses. In recent years, 10 former assistants have been hired as teachers at P.S. 6.

School administrators said that hiring union members not only would cost more, but would also probably bring in people with less experience; the typical paraprofessional does not have a four-year college degree. "

all these naive tax paying parents have been worried about the coming budget cuts, when ha! the doe don't need no stinkin budget cuts to screw everyone. they'll take away things they don't even pay for. it's very very sad.
