Discussion about
The good news: hubby and I had a successful move. We're now happily ensconced on West 98th Street. The bad news: we have too much stuff! This is the first move I've ever made where the movers were *taking bets* that not everything would fit in the target place. What these means to you: starting this thread to get rid of some duplicates, some gently used, some simply used. Some things I'd love a... [more]

Is it a canister-type Electrolux or upright?

craigslist, Ali -- I have sold tickets on it and it worked in 24hrs! Also, I bought a leather chair and ottoman -- try it! plus they come and pick it up!

Ali, on the one hand we have this respectable Arkansas girl made good with Harvard, very pretty photo on your very respectable blog.
On the other hand ... a 12 year old refurbished vacuum, you want cash?

Hi Front_Porch,

Congrats on your move, I don't need a sweeper but a friend of mine may need a mover. May I ask which company you used and were you happy with them?

>>The goal is to keep from having to haul everything to Housing Works.<<

Forget Housing Works. Salvation Army and Goodwill pick up.

"Forget Housing Works. Salvation Army and Goodwill pick up. "

Isn't there a minimum value or only certain types of donations that they will pick up (i.e., they don't pick up clothes but maybe valuable furniture, etc?)

Ali, I have great disdain for Salvation Army since they announced that they reserve the right to fire any employees who don't tow their religious line ... but there's one at 96th (Bwy/WEA) that's very convenient to you for dropoff.

I don't believe so, though normally when I've done a pick-up I've had several bags of items to go at once. Possible they wouldn't take just one vacuum cleaner as a pick-up, but my impression from Ali's post is she may have other things to dump as well.

And, Alan, yes--the Salvation Army is definitely in the dog house for that. Another good option for Ali may be the St Francis church thrift shop, which I adore (excellent book section and people who run it are nice). It's on 96th bet B'way and Amsterdam. If taking stuff there, be forewarned there is a short flight of steps down into the shop from street.

canister, not upright.

Don't make fun of me for trying to get a little cash for my old stuff since of course the movers broke a couple of things; squid, thanks for the St. Francis thrift shop idea.

As far as movers, I think it's always hard to recommend because it's like dealing with a temp agency, and you get a different crew every time. Still, they were nice guys and didn't break much (though I'll note we hand-carried our china).

Our moving contractor, because of the Long Island part, was Ed Zalewski of Island Relocation LLC in Ronkonkoma -- I'll find his number. Our movers were fast -- they moved a storage unit from Long Beach to the city, loaded up our studio, loaded up a storage unit, and unloaded all in about nine hours.

10023, I just scored a used Kesslord off eBay -- I'll be sportin' it and thinking fondly of Paris.

But the Kate Spade's a freebie -- too much of a pain to find the box with the camera in it, for one thing! If no one wants it, it'll go to the thrift store.

front_porch, if your building has any doormen/staff, how about consider asking if they are interested? We got a lot of food gifts over the holidays that we couldn't eat, and they were very appreciative. Also you could round up a list of stuff, and blast email your friends first so they can get first dibs.
