I think the most interesting statistic is left out: density. While chase may be number 3, you have to wonder how many branches are within a block of each other now with a heavy Manhattan concentration.

My triumph of customer service, compliments BofA:

closing scheduled this morning for 11am. forgot I needed certified checks until yesterday, and with no Wells Fargo anywhere around, lawyer advised me to adjourn. took a WF personal check to the counter at BofA, asked the teller to confirm when it would clear, he said "no holds! it will clear tonight after midnight." No way!

My luck was too good to be true... even though I saw the funds go from pending to deposited online and had a telephone rep confirm, the BofA branch I went to this morning at 7:59am (not my usual one), said it would take a week before they'd issue a teller check. asked if my BofA mortgage broker could help, she looked his name up on her lobby computer, had a confirming email from him within 30 minutes, and I was on my way. Thanks Sunny, you've been great all along. And thanks BofA for not failing before I closed.

My $.02:

Wells Fargo's purchase of Wachovia is great for them. Formerly no reach east of Ohio, now they've got like 10 branches in the city. Chase + Wamu? They've got enough density here to choke a racehorse.

I don't know what went on during the recent spate of bank branch opening in the last few years, but historically, banks refused to pay any security to landlords (and on commercial leases, that number might normally be up to 6 months). But banks would be "Hey, WE'RE A BANK" and the landlords would let them go with zero security. So, if that didn't change and all these new branches are open and all these landlords have no security........
