Discussion about
Hi Renovating a small bathroom (its the 2nd Bath, has only a shower stall). I personally prefer large, stone colored tiles. But I was wondering if large tiles in such a small bath would make it look small? (You know, look down at the floor and go Wow, the place is only 3 tiles wide!) LOL. Opinions? btw, the stall is 2.5 feet by 4 feet and the toilet/sink area is 4 X 5. There is a 1.5 X 4 section that is completely sealed up because that is where the pipes and ventilation is for the shower. The tiles I like are 9 7/8 inches by 7 7/8 inches.
Larger tiles should make the space seem bigger, not smaller.
My buddy just put very small tiles in his small bathroom. I think large tiles elongate the space, small ones constrict it.
OP here. COOL. Thanks for the advice. Will keep looking at the bigger tiles. I really like the way they look anyway. The smaller ones look to busy to me, but its a personal thing.
I think the color choice will matter as much as much as the size of the tiles.
In general, warm colors make spaces look smaller and cool colors make spaces look bigger. If you could do your floor in a cool blue tile, it will look larger than if you use warm terra cotta colored tiles.
Go to Home Depot or a kitchen/bathroom store and look at sample floors. See which colors make the sample rooms look biggest.
I have big tiles in my new condo and I (sorry) think they look sort of cheap -- like a patio in the bathroom. Incidentally, smaller tiles are safer near bathtubs / showers where your feet are wet, since you step on more joints / grout and get better footing. Large tiles can be slick if you put your foot down right in the middle.
Ha. You're right. They do look kinda cheap. But where to get the pretty lil glass ones without breaking the bank?? And don't they cost more to put in?
You can mix it up too - I have big tiles which are not cheap nor do they look cheap because i bought really nice ones from villeroy & boch. Then I bought smaller floor tiles from same manufacturer but octagon shape - they are not as slick. Most floor tiles are specifically made for your floor (i.e. less slick).
the general rule though is (if you read interior design books etc) - larger tiles give appearance of more space. Mine are white too which is also even more helpful.
OP again... hmm... I was leaning towards beige (I guess terra cotta? I dont know much about color names) tiles for the walls and either a darker shade for the floor, or, like my current bath, a grayish blue (each tile is different).
#6 - good idea, I was planning to go to HD this weekend.
#7 - good point. I forgot that others step on the floor barefoot. My gf does that. I think its kinda weird. I always have a dry towel nearby and dry my feet first and step into my slippers. She thinks I'm kinda weird for doing that. Haha.
Great tiles to look at for a small space: Carerra (sp?) marble, grayish white. Since your space is small you don't have to cover a ton of space so cost will not be high. I just put them in and they are very elegant. You can get them in any size, but a 5X5 looks nice...be sure to put them in on the bias (diagonal) rather than square to the door.

Keep in mind that white marble(s) has a tendency to yellow over time.
