Why not just use the toxic kind? Sleep in another room for a night and you're good to go.

i thought that VOC paints, or non-VOC paints, are available in Home Depot and Benjamin Moore

Best place to buy paint is R&R Supply in LIC. You can get BMoore paint at about 10 dollars less per can. I purchased 13 gallons of Aura for my renovation and saved a ton of money. Can't go wrong.

They also have a website: http://www.rrgeneralsupply.com/

Aura and Natura are the way to go (low and zero VOC, respectively). Any Benjamin Moore distributor will carry both. Our local guy always gives us 10% off just for asking. If you are buying large quantity, negotiate.

the milk stuff does not seem like a serious option for walls

No, I think it's mostly for furniture and arts n crafts.

Seriously, though, why don't you want to use standard latex paints? Whatever volatility there is goes out the window within a day or so.

This seems like yet another case of the health food industrial complex terrorizing us.

I'm just thinking out loud here but we've got so many children with autism & elders with dementia; is it all the DDTs & chemicals which we've been using? I don't know. I remember hearing that we've all got teflon inside us due to all the non-stick pans. I don't know the answers but I've got some questions.

I've seen it at Lowe's, Home Depot and most hardware stores.

We used Farrow and Ball. Think we went to a place on Mercer St.

Farrow and Ball is great -- IMHO, a better paint than Aura -- but be warned that it can run $80 a gallon, and if SoHo doesn't have what you want in stock, it might take a few weeks to get it.

Stay away from milk paint!

I had friends who used that stuff and the spoiled milk smell lingered for months.

I've seen Aura advertized in a point store on the north side of 72nd street b/w Columbus and Amsterdam (closer to Amsterdam). Sorry, can't remember the store name.

I'm still amazed I survived drinking out of rusty garden hoses growing up in Queens.
I also didn't know a single person allergic to nuts.

Alanhart VOCs take a full year to dissipate from a painted wall. That's a long time to sleep on the couch. (Info brought to you by my pregnant wife who is a chemist and did pre-renovation highbrow research on the stuff.)

Glamma Consumer Reports likes the Aura brand. Stay away from the Freshaire line by Glidden sold at Home Depot. I've wrestled with it, and it dries too quickly to be workable.

"i believe there is a store somewhere in the village that sells milk paint?"

DO NOT USE MILK PAINT FOR YOUR WALLS!

I have friends who did this, and their entire place smelled of spoiled milk for TWO YEARS.

For God's sake, just use freaking REAL latex paint.

****

"i am more scared of chemicals than any other thing going on in the world right now."

Do you eat anything with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or artificial sweeteners? Do you drink tap water? Do you microwave your food? Do you walk around New York City, breathing the air without a gas mask?

I assure you, a few days' worth of breathing in dissipated paint fumes will do your body a fraction of the damage that eating Lean Cuisines, Jif peanut butter, microwaved ANYTHING, and Diet Cokes have already done.

"Do you eat anything with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or artificial sweeteners?"
