Nomura bought a fairly big package of distressed loans from whoever was on top in the fast paced merger of the Dime and other banks (I don't remember which fish ended up eating all the others: perhaps it was Wamu in the end?) in the late 1990's. I think First Boston bought the condo loans and Nomura bought the Coops loans, and paid about 26 cents on the dollar for them.
