Discussion about
We are planning to add a temporary wall in the living room of our rental apartment to make it into an additional bedroom because of neighboring noise issues. Can anyone recommend a company to provide and install the wall? Our preliminary research has yielded the following companies in this area: Wallzilla, Wall 2 Wall, 1 Wall 2 Rooms, Room Dividers and The New York Wall Company. Has anyone had a temporary wall installed by any of these companies?

ccharley: Do you recall the name of the other company? About how long did it take once you selected the wall until the wall was installed? Have you had any problems with the wall and did you notice if the wall happens to reduce noise?

Thank you for your help.

IT's pretty sturdy. My dd sleeps in the room we made and never wakes up. So it definitely keeps out the noise I can't remember the other company now but it was like $200 more so I didn't use them. I got an appt exactly when I wanted - super let me do it right before I moved in bc it would have been hard to get the furniture in thru the door. I think I gave them a week or 1 notice -I really don't remember

A friend of mine used a company based in Long Island. I'll try to get the name for you tomorrow.

DO NOT USE THE NEW YORK WALL COMPANY!!! They put up and take down the wall fine but you'll never get your deposit back. Been trying to get mine back for nearly a year. The owner has given me his word over and over that he's sending out a check "at the end of the week" and finally another employee admitted to me I wasn't going to get it back, that they actually have had meetings in the office deciding not to send people deposits. This guy actually mocked me asking if I thought it was worth it to take them to court. If you search online there are plenty of other customers who haven't gotten their deposits back along with a bunch of complaints to BBB. It's not even really about the money... these guys just lie right to your face. Crooks. But don't just take my word for it:

newyork.bbb.org
yelp.com
my3cents.com
complaints.com

Some other things to consider with temporary walls. If noise is an issue you might ask if they offer any kind of sound proofing, otherwise it's just two sheets of sheetrock with metal tension rods in between. If you plan to use carpets or rugs inside the room make sure they hang the doors high enough to give some clearance otherwise the door won't be able to open over the rug, etc. If you care about the aesthetics, try to find a company that actually will tape and mud the drywall seams. Otherwise, most of the companies I've seen just put a strip of wood over the seam which gives the whole thing a cheap look and feel.

Linden, Thank you so much for your advice. We're sorry that you had such a bad experience with the New York Wall Company. We were considering contacting them and now, thanks to you, we know better.

I guess people can have really different experiences. We were totally happy with New York Wall Company. We agonized about a wall we needed to have built. We are using the room primarily as an extra living space, but it could also be an extra guest bedroom. We wanted something that would allow privacy when used as a guest area but would not block light when we used it as a living space. Our designer came up with these sliding opaque doors that were going to cost $15,000! Way over our budget. We decided to look into some cheaper options and ended up engaging New York Wall Company. They were great. They did it in one day. We ended up with windowed French doors. We had to arrange for blinds to be put over the French door windows so guests can have privacy. The cost was $2500. So we were really pleased with the price. They were great on every level. Showed up when they were supposed to and finished the job right on time for the price we agreed and did not leave a mess.

When you guys took down the wall, did you have to repaint? Did it damage the floors?

NY WALL uses the fact that most people would not take them to small claims court over $200-$300 to do two things:
not refund security deposit
use a small window around month end when everyone moves to claim they have no availability to remove the wall (although if you agree to pay them, they are definitely available)

the way they harass you on the phone when you call is definitely a sign that it's rehearsed and part of their standard operating procedure. use them at your own risk.

I'm currently pricing a wall myself and came across this site which gives some sort of ratings.
http://www.pressurizedwallcompanies.com/

I don't know how valid they are but better than nothing.

AptHunter265, thanks for the link to the ratings. We just made an appointment for the Manhattan Pressurized Wall company to come to our apartment Wednesday evening and we'll post here with what we find out with respect to pricing, etc.

spqsydney: They put up the wall just fine because they want to get paid, and they removed my wall just fine too, probably because they want the door and hardware back, AND if they didn't it could cause some liability on their part. Doesn't sound like you've tried to get your deposit back yet. Good luck.

aifamm: I'm pretty sure any wall company will paint the walls once they've installed them, and so you'll probably have some paint build up along the edges where the temporary wall meets your wall and where it meets the ceiling. I've had to scrap and sand this area and will repaint. No damage to the floors, but I'm in a pre-war where the floors are very durable. If I had newer floors that I know scratch more easily I would suggest having some cardboard ready and request they use a couple layers where the tensions rods meet the floor and ceiling.

On that site they have great reviews for PWNY. I don't see how they got them because they do not respond to e-mails and never pick up their phone.

We had our appointment with Manhattan Pressurized Wall. The representative seemed very knowledgeable and offered good suggestions for how to solve our noise issue. They got back to me the next morning with a reasonable quote for the installation. We have scheduled the installation for late next week. Any problems, we'll report here, but so far so good.

One of my neighbors had a temporary wall installed by Manhattan Pressure Wall a few months ago. I think she told me that our building had 2 or 3 companies they would allow to work in the building, but I can check with her tomorrow. The wall looks pretty good and she told me that the people they sent to do the work were very good and cleaned up beautifully. Obviously, you can see the difference between the temporary wall and the apartment walls, but it really looks fine.

Definitely not. She told me that there were 2 (maybe 3?) guys working there all day, banging and drilling- not quiet. If you need to section off an area and can't hire a company because building doesn't allow it, maybe buy a large screen to separate the areas.

AptHunter265, Since you are talking about sneaking a temporary wall into your apartment building and you are an anonymous person on a website, I don't feel that I could or should offer you an opinion as to whether a temporary wall is "easy to sneak in" your building. The only information that I have about temporary walls is the very general information mentioned above. Have a good evening.

i had them installed, they did a good job, easy quick, i would only request one item is that they insulate the walls ($15-$20 extra in materials) but it will be so much better (sound), come to think about it they came a little late (1 hour), i think the van broke down, but they finished it all in one day, can't really complain. quality of the wall is good, no complaints, and price was really low,

just put up temporary walls - partitions really, since my building is no longer allowing pressurized floor-to-ceiling walls - and we spoke with several companies who service the Manhattan area. Without a doubt, the most helpful company was Living Space. We spoke with Steve Polo who walked us through all of the options, and was very knowledgable about the changing building policies. On installation day, he had his crew prepared, organized, fast and detail-oriented. He also called a few days later to do a status check, in case we had any other feedback or modifications to make. Very professional and thorough. It was a pleasure to use their service.

1 Wall 2 Rooms actually has done a really good job and they were cheaper than the competition by more than $250. They did 13 8 4 = 25 feet of wall in about 7 hours, some other companies were saying three days! I would definitely at least call to get a price quote.

The Wall Factory scammed me out of a $520 deposit. They never showed up to do the installation, finally agreed to refund me, but then stopped responding to calls and emails. This was over a month ago. DO NOT USE THEM!

I was scammed out of $400 by The Wall Factory as well about a year ago. They actually did a previous job for me at this same apartment over 2 years ago and did a good job. No issues. I hired them for another renovation project about a year ago and I got the same runaround. They never showed up, agreed to refund me and then stopped responding to calls or emails.

The man behind The Wall Factory is Lawrence Anderson. Anyone have any luck tracking him down?

I have never used any of the companies that you guys have mentioned, although I sympathize with everyone who was scammed out of money. I noticed that a few people have had trouble with the walls themselves and wanted to inform everyone that the removal of pressurized walls should be easy and cause no damage whatsoever. There should never be any screws involved as the walls are stabilized through pressure, not nuts and bolts. Check out my blog http://pressurizedwallguide.blogspot.com/ - I actually went through the process myself and found it to be as smooth as could be. The company I used was informative, knowledgeable and helped me along the way. I hope you guys can experience the same!

The best option is temporary room dividers. These are often used to improve the layout and functionality of a room. Acoustic temporary divider walls are used to control the noise transmission in space and are very popular in busy spaces such as offices or school environments.

You can choose the best temporary room dividers. These articulated sliding temporary room dividers panels are mounted on a ceiling track system. These are widely used to dissipate large spaces in residential space and large public spaces (such as gymnasiums or theaters) where rapid changes are required. In the case of school use, temporary room dividers not only provide quick and easy room changes, but also provide the right sound absorption for the rooms.
