Discussion about The Printing House at 421 Hudson Street in West Village
It's a total shithole.
Unless you like loft beds, then enjoy!
I rented in the building some 12 years ago.
I had a 2 bedroom and a rooomate at the time. He had the upstairs loft and can't tell you how many times he hit his head on the ceiling in the loft bedroom. My downstairs toilet would backup once every month or so.The super's explanation after 3 months of no resolve told me that although all the apartments are not supposed to have washing machines in their apartment, the upstairs apartment had that clause missing from their paperwork and they couldn't stop them from using it which was causing the backups. The super if it is the same one is also quite lazy and slow from fixing any problems there.
The overall feeling when living there was that the units are poorly constructed.
The building was super quiet though. (Had a rear apartment)
I like this bldg. overall. High ceilings are always good in my book, and if you face the baseball field, you get tons of sun & a nice view. Also, the monthlies are ridiculously low for the amenities they provide (but, then, the service isn't that great, from what I hear). The following are some things you should check out:
1. The square footage. It's a condo, but I have seen some gross overestimates (e.g., inclusion of the loft space is always tricky). Always check the offering plan.
2. Don't let them tell you that the studio is a 1BR, and the 1BR is a 2BR. Lofts as well as windowless & closetless rooms don't count as bedrooms. Again, check the offering plan carefully.
3. As noted by truthskr10, the bldg's infrastructure isn't that great (a colleague has mentioned chronically clogged toilets, etc.). So, keep in mind that the flashy "over renovations" of those units may be deceiving.
Yeah, the layouts are really weird. The apartments just don't look right.
Yes, high ceilings in of themselves are good. But they can only do so much in terms of covering up small rooms... and, if they're used to give you 5'10 bedrooms, they're actually just a liability.
Avenueb put it eloquently: shithole.
