Upper West Side, between the parks. My dog is in heaven.

Not in my neighborhood, thank you. We have enough inconsiderate people fouling the sidewalks with dog excrement. I was thinking about inventing something that would automatically zap the person who didn't clean up after their dogs. Not to mention that no-one cleans up after dog urine anyway. Yuck.

I understand you issue with SOME dog owners, but most of us do clean up after our furry kids, then again I'm tired of going out to dinner and hearing screaming kids with parents not doing a thing to quiet their kids

nyc10023, we seem to be crossing paths today quite a bit on SE. Have to agree with j1w. My dog is considerably better behaved and less annoying than many people's children.

JLW: agree, I never eat at prime time, nice restaurants with my kids. We're either in at the crack of opening for bkfast or on a sidewalk patio at 6pm.

Yes, but do you clean his/her pee from the sidewalk? And truthfully, other people's kids are annoying.

And how should we clean up dog urine? Oh please. Anyway I always clean up =- that's why I still take plastic bags from stores.

I don't know but don't you find it gross to walk on dog urine? People complain about other humans urinating on sidewalks, how is that better or worse than all the puddles of dog urine dripping down the sidewalk. There are pee pads, btw.

CC: I am sympathetic to dog owners, but I feel like I'm perpetually trying to avoid huge streams of dog pee.

my biggest problems with dog owners is they don't curb their dogs...they pick up the poop but pee needs to be curbed...the front of my bldg. stinks because i'm close to the avenue and dog owners constantly walk up the block with their "cute" dogs. my super is terrific with washing the street down but it never lasts.

UWS is very dog friendly, but i agree too much pee and poo everywhere!!!! though, it only takes one jackass to not clean up, right? then someone steps in it and its down the entire sidewalk. agree that the pee is so gross too! i'm convinced lazy dog owners are to blame for "strollers all over the sidewalk". if we could just walk in a straight line we wouldn't be as annoying.

As a dog and child owner on the UWS. I love both and wish the world and neighborhood had more. Its the fucking adults I hate, any ideas to purge them?

The Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village complexes are very dog friendly. Lots of poop all over the place and all, at least when I lived there.

J1, by all means bring your pooch to BPC. It's fantastically dog-friendly, and the only reason I don't have one is that my cats would hate me forevermore. Lots of parks, of varying distances away, so if your pup needs exercise you can choose the one you want to run to and if not, there's always a run close by. The culture surrounding pooch-clean-up is very good here, possibly also because there's lots of kids.

"I was thinking about inventing something that would automatically zap the person who didn't clean up after their dogs."

Find me that, 10023, and I will be the first in line to buy.

I've lived on the Upper East Side with my dog (and also my husband) for 17 years. There are tons of dogs on the UES. I would suggest looking for a building where they allow dogs of all sizes. The only time I had a problem was when we lived in a building which allowed only small dogs. Thpse buildings seem to tolerate dogs, but not really want them in the building. You want a very dog friendly building where people don't expect you to take your dog only in the service elevator. We used to take our dog to Carl Schurz park (East End Avenue in high 80's/low 90/s) which had alot of dogs.

harlem
specially bred dogs imported from the deep south
major park access
dogs urinate on the sidewalk but no less frequently than people
dog urinating on my car is less likely than man urinating on my car
dog poop gets picked up more often than man poop

Yes, LOL, when I was looking in Harlem a few years ago there were a few scary houses with backyards full of "killer" dogs. What's up with that anyway?

I guess the urination factor doesn't bother me, but then I take off my shoes in the foyer. I do wonder at people who wear flip-flops or sandals in summer, and shudder at the occasional barefoot pedestrian. Eww!

it seems like every other person in Gramercy Park has a dog so I assume most of the buildings are dog friendly (my building embraces all pets). Union Square and Madison Square both have dog runs although it is kind of a hike to large green spaces.

GV, Wash. Sq. Pk area: 2nd phase of park renovation features two state-of-the-art dog play areas. Each will be self-cleaning with a sprinkler system and drainage that dumps directly into sewer system so no puddles. Gravel is tested to resist compacting and minimize dust. Shade to be provided along with people seating. entrances and fencing adjusted in response to community meetings. From discussions with architect/landscape designer I was really impressed. We'll see what materializes. Rest of park is civilized and very dog friendly people, as is neighborhood.

Chelsea sucked as a dog owner for 20 years. Nothing good for dogs and Madison Park is a haul from most of Chelsea.

KW: great idea. They should provide these in Riverside Park & Central Park. As for my invention, I was thinking about some chemical that one could spray on the sidewalk that would be activated by dog pee/poop. Unfortunately, it would get innocent bystanders as well.

eastendraider, when did you live in pcv/st? this was one of the least pet-friendly locations in the city until about two years ago. one of the only things i really like about TS is they now allow pets, although not on the grass.

i have not once encountered dog poop in PCV. i have plenty of problems with the grounds, but people cleaning up after their pets isn't on the list.

yes- there are a few spots in bpc that are dog free but so many that you can take your dog. there are two dog parks, battery park (the park) along the water going uptown. mine loves tot visit the marina. plus the whole vibe is dog friendly.

There's also one across from Whole Foods, which seems to be patronized by larger dogs and their owners, and has a swimming pool. Great fun for dogs in summer. There's another on North End Avenue near the Goldman construction that's relatively unknown, and one tucked away in Teardrop Park as well. Plus, if your dog likes to run, there's one up towards the Pier 40 parking garage. I see a lot of owners run their pups up there to play in the pool, and then walk home. Exercise and a bath all in one trip.

my dog remarkably curbs himself. He does pee on the trees- he's little though so he doesn't usually puddle. I'm sorry but I can't imagine carrying weewee pads outside besides the cost is insane. Wish he would go on my balcony on a pad but no way

Please don't let your dog pee in the tree wells. I wish all dogs peed in the gutter in between parked cars. Then the street cleaning trucks would have a chance to clean the stink.

dogs suck, other people's kids suck, owners suck, adults suck, all true.

Difference is... the adults pay taxes. The kids are being raised to pay more taxes.

If you really care about animals, I don't know why you'd try to have 'em in Manhattan.

some jackass had a big dog, and it was peeing on the recycled cardboard neatly wrapped, right in front of the front entrance to a children's store (and 20 feet from the residential entrance).

Literally wetting down the cardboard, so no change of just drying quickly. Basically, creating a stinnk bomb and safety hazard.

I said "hey, what are you doing" and he's like "my dog has a bladder problem". I said, "your dog can have a bladder problem in the street... KIDS go right here. PEOPLE live here".

he responds with "its ok, I live across the street".

The Link at 310 West 52nd is very dog friendly and Central Park is close by. They allow any kind of dog. On the down side, I would say it is out of control with how many dogs live in this building and the fact that any breed is allowed.

Thank you all for your ideas and insight, my dogs are small (under 10lbs) so dog runs aren't a need for them but rather long walks in the park keep their tails wagging, we'll look for something near central park or washington square park.....

I think washington square is a GREAT location. I am hoping that will be my next apt (not for 10 yrs or so). It fantastic for dogs and people!! I took my dog there a few times and we both loved it. There is a great dog park for small dogs, nice for them to socialize, and lots of squirrels!

All of NYC adores dogs! I love Peter Detmold park --- cute little place, secret-ish and off the beaten path. So move to east 40's and low east 50's.
One time I was there with my dog and she got loose and actually was running on the FDR!!! Cars honking. She almost got killed of course but she's always lived dangerously.
At this very moment in the last hours of 2009 she is dying of cancer. She is walking aimlessly around my apartment. She can't remember to sit down. I have to push her down to get her to lie down. I've filled her full of her pain meds but the tramadol is only making her constipated. I'm going to give her some xanax now.
Very, very sad for me, and it is also taxing living with a 12 year old dog who's dying of a malignant sarcoma. But she's not in pain. Just confused.

Just love your pup...and be glad that she's not in pain.

I know how hard when your girl is walking aimlessly around.
