Discussion about
http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2009/11/obama_skipping.html What message is Obama sending? President Obama announced this afternoon that he is dispatching Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to represent the US at the 20th anniversary Monday of the fall of the Berlin Wall -- the symbolic end of Soviet dominance over Eastern Europe and the Cold War. But his absence is not sitting well with some conservatives. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich wrote today that while some consider Obama's decision "an outrage, I consider it a tragedy.

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/11/08/obama-draws-criticism-sitting-berlin-wall-anniversary/

President Obama squeezed in a trip to Copenhagen last month to lobby, unsuccessfully, for Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. He plans to travel to Oslo next month to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, an award that even Obama has said he does not deserve. And this coming week, he sets out on a weeklong tour of Asia.

For its part, the administration is citing a scheduling conflict. The White House says the president simply does not have the time to go, with the trip to Asia starting Wednesday.

Imbecile, most of those countries are still under KGB/Communist rule. What part of "Putin" don't you understand?

Gingrich = Putin + lots and lots of lipids - lots and lots of intelligence

http://www.examiner.com/x-4454-Chicago-Geopolitics-Examiner~y2009m9d19-Did-Obama-sell-out-allies-by-scrapping-Bushs-BMD-plan-in-Europe

President Barack Obama’s polarizing announcement to scrap Bush’s plan for placing ballistic missile defense (BMD) installations in Poland and the Czech Republic has elicited mixed reactions from the political right and left in the United States, as well as divergent sentiments across the globe. Some conservative critics believe Obama is appeasing Russia and leaving our Eastern European allies out to dry, while supporters called the maneuver a “sound strategic decision.”

I like the concept of a “sound” strategy more than a “cheap” one, especially in respect to the BMD installations which was Mr. Obama's most critical national security policy decision thus far. I say this because Obama mentioned that one of the key drivers of the administration's determination was “cost-effectiveness”. Even if it’s true, I wouldn’t have included, let alone emphasized, that particular point in a speech heard around the world; especially when our Eastern European allies are already having a hard time coping with our new scheme.

Obama and Defense Secretary Gates claimed that this did not mean that BMD was dead in Europe. Gates said that a still-to-be-developed ground-based version of the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) system, which is the Navy’s sea-based BMD system that will provide defense against medium and long range ballistic missiles, is a potential viable solution. Gates also claimed that Poland and the Czech Republic would be at the front of the line when the Pentagon decides to deploy these land-based SM-3s – but not until 2015.

The statement that many believe gave Iraw the green light to invade Iraq(words and actions are important)

April Glaspie: I saw the Diane Sawyer program on ABC. And what happened in that program was cheap and unjust. And this is a real picture of what happens in the American media; even to American politicians themselves. These are the methods the Western media employs. I am pleased that you add your voice to the diplomats who stand up to the media. Because your appearance in the media, even for five minutes, would help us to make the American people understand Iraq. This would increase mutual understanding. If the American president had control of the media, his job would be much easier.

Mr. President, not only do I want to say that President Bush wanted better and deeper relations with Iraq, but he also wants an Iraqi contribution to peace and prosperity in the Middle East. President Bush is an intelligent man. He is not going to declare an economic war against Iraq.

I don't know what was the specific statement, but it is widely understood that Saddam in 1990 thought he had the green light from the U.S. to invade Kuwait. Obviously it was a misunderstanding, though who knows whether he would have behaved differently had he known the light was red, so to speak.

Saddam probably qualifies as a crazy wacko. It's possible that everyone here is right about something.

The sec of state is a pretty important personage, so I think that's good enough to represent the U.S. at the Berlin Wall ceremony. Failing to deliver the missile defense components that the Poles and Czechs asked for bothers me more, but I think we can be comfortable that Russia at this point does not have the capacity to invade Poland or the Czech Republic. They do have the capacity to manipulate natural gas shipments, which is annoying but hardly WWIII . . .

post87, but newt and RS don't think it's sufficient.

there are a great many things that can be linked to NYC real estate, but the ceremony of the fall of the Berlin Wall is hardly one. i have a great idea. get grandpa Bush off his tush and send him to Berlin. he spent so much time taking credit for the inevitable, he might as well go. and it would be a great "reach-out" moment to the other side.

or just send limbaugh and newt, maybe cheney. the world loves them so.

so saddam---a known lunatic--decides to do something crazy. and according to riversider, its not because a known lunatic is acting crazy but because of a failure by the first bush administration.

you tell me who's crazy.

how's your sister aboutready doing with her new toilet seat? I'm hoping soon she'll tell us a new story about a family holiday she spent with a toilet plunger like that Christmas Eve in the late 1980s.

Quick, call your sister aboutready, tell her you are outnumbered and you need her to get off the toilet to help you. Make sure you don't call her during the 50 minutes she walks her husband to work or the 2 hours in the gym ... rest of the day is wide open, reviewing blogs for new clever words like "fucktard".
