Discussion about
All the companies online look similar. Anyone have any good/bad experiences? Thanks.....
Condoms?
Another appropriate comment from doggie.
Did you mean condomz?
Wow, what's even worse than putting a posting up on a Friday night on streeteasy is some jerkoff making a dumbass remark.
How old is your child? May be overkill. Just saying.
Shouldn't have to do that much, unless you have huge amounts of dangerously placed tchotchkes everywhere, in which case, in 2 years, your child will be able to pull over any chair and reach everything.
If you're worried about the toddler stage, go through this list:
1. Plug all outlets with covers.
2. Cabinet locks on all cabs with chemicals, focusing on bathroom and under kitchen sink.
3. Door knob covers (won't work so well on levers or oval knobs).
4. If you have outdoor space, make sure you have a good lock, or get a cheap sensor to detect opening.
5. Make sure your door lock is high enough that your child can't reach (maybe add a latch).
I've never been a big believer in shrouding kitchen countertops or coffee tables with those plastic covers.
First of all, any wound is minimal and at some point you have to teach the kid to stay away from certain things.
No childproofer is going to be able to fix the following:
1. A child who likes munching on electrical cords.
2. An exceptionally agile child who can climb on any cabinet, counter, etc.
3. Keep the bathroom door shut at all times if you have a kid who's curious and likes climbing in bathtubs
and turning on the water, etc.
Some ppl also like adding a gate to every room that they believe should be off limits (kitchen, bathroom, bedroom).
thanks for response 10023. I think our main concern is the terraces, sharp edges, chemicals, etc.
Just get a playpen.
What's a childhood without the occasional trip to the ER?
Toj: I don't know what kind of furniture you have, but the main concern would be coffee table, end tables, kitchen counter. I don't believe in enclosing furniture forever - you might as well get rid of it and go to ottomans, and I know a fair number of 5 year olds who hurt themselves on coffee tables with roughplay. Wood tables are all fine, I don't see that you would get hurt that much running into them (we have a kid who does this with some regularity).
Chemicals - just relocate to one or two places, and get the cabinet locks.
Terrace - this is the most dangerous, IMO - either gate around the opening, keep permanently locked with very high lock/latch or door sensor.
Jerkoff?! Hah. Oh you fucking nimrod, you mean does anybody know a good parent. Gate all you want, nothing like vigilence and interaction to stop the trips o ER. Imh experience.
It's been 2 minutes and no brilliant commentary from pigshrimp
darwinism - if the kid is dumb enough to get itself into a mess, he will get weeded out and the rest of us will be better off with one less stupid, overly protected kid around...
computer lab at old age home don't open till 6p.m. alan.
agreed dowmtowm12345... but what if parenting is what sets humans apart from dingos? That putting up a gate is in fact reverse darwinism... meaning it's the time parents look after and ensure a little one's health and interaction that is at the heart of humanism?
I childproofed my apartment, but they still get in.
never used a company, but.....i personally like the "corner softeners". we have sharp metal radiator covers and had an incident that was too close to an eyeball for my comfort. i like to put all chemical products up very high. watch out for the toilet bowl. i'm not a personal fan of cabinet locks, but i only keep things that aren't dangerous in accessible kitchen cabinets (pots, pans, sheets, tupperware). kids like to explore and i think its good for them. i just put stove knob covers on my oven tonight (after a few ruined meals). do you live on a high floor? windows, even with the window guards make me incredibly nervous. i think you can get some sort of stopper/lock so the window only opens so far (i need to get these).
