I did motorized shades....they are expensive but I still can't get over the ease of operation!

There's a townhouse up the street from where I rent which was newly renovated with the floor to ceiling windowns. They use floor to ceiling sheer type curtains with a pattern on it to block the light (and my view so I can't peek from the sidewalk to see how they've decorated the ground floor). I think it depends on how much light you would like to stream through the windows. I'm not partial to curtains over blinds. Maybe if it's within your price range to do two sets of curtains- one sheer for the daytime and the other with a more substantial fabric for the evening. You can close either or both sets of curtains at night. Try to put fabric samples by the window and see how much light streams through. My living room has three large windows (not floor to ceiling) and it gets very warm and bright when it's sunny outside.

My new place has window walls and I face south. I plan to do two motorized shades per window (probably Lutron) - one light filtering and one light blocking. Expensive, yes. But worth it for the look I want plus good control over heat load through the windows throughout the year. I will even be able to program them to automatically lower and raise to maximize efficiency of the HVAC system.

Jim123, I love your suggestion. I wasn't aware that you could put two sets of motorized sets per window. Good to know.

I think the installation of shades at Perry St. (the restaurant) is simply beautiful, but it requires a very modern space.

Floor to ceiling windows - I love a floor-to-ceiling sheer blind, preferably automatic but that depends on your budget. Then, the sweep of drapes over on the room side, heavy or light according to your taste and needs.

Don't people have any art or anything to hang?

Jim, check these people out: http://www.metrosolar.com/

I used them and they did an amazing job on my windows. My apartment was like a greenhouse even in the winter, and the film they installed on the windows cut the temperature by nearly 20 degrees!

I can't think of anything more beautiful than a great Manhattan view (inside looking out)....

with lots of windows, are there blinds or curtains that preserve your sense of seeing out at night without people clearly being able to see in?......(during the day you can't see in these modern buildings but at night with the lights on one can see clearly, even from far away)....

advice?
