Is it normal to have to postpone closing because appraisal hasnt come in?

Was wondering about this because we are still waiting for appraisal from BOA and our closing was scheduled earlier this week...

I think closing dates are typically referred to as "on or about", which I was told could mean up to 30 days of the set date. With all the different factors that have to come together for an on-time closing I would imagine it's not uncommon to push the date.
