When do you have to pay the real estate attorney?

They told me that I don't have to pay the real estate attorney if there is no closing, and that I should not pay him before closing in any case. It sounds strange to me, but anydoby knows if this is correct? Thank you

I paid 50% up front. The rest will be due at closing. I'm not exactly sure what would happen if we don't close, but I suspect since he reviewed the contract and negotiated, he would keep the up front money.

I understood that it doesn't get paid until closing, which is what I did.

Well you and the attorney should agree to how he will be paid and what he would be paid up front.
