Discussion about
We are considering bidding on an apartment at York and 63rd. The first time we had really been to the neighborhood was when we saw the apartment, and we didn't have time to walk around. We will certainly do that before we go into contract, but in the meantime I am interested in people's views and experiences living in the neighborhood, especially with a family. Specifically: How noisy/crowded is it with the hospital and the bridge? Are there parks and playgrounds for kids nearby? Are there the usual amenities nearby, i.e. supermarkets, restaurants, bars, drycleaners, etc. Just how inconvenient is being that far east, in terms of getting to work, going out, people visiting? Thanks very much.
newbuyer99, I live pretty close to those streets. It's a nice street to walk along, but very quiet in terms of pedestrian traffic. Alot of car activity because of the bridge. It's a pretty long walk to some amenities. nearby supermarkets: food emporium 59th/1st and Gristedes at 65th/1st. Dry cleaners, drug stores on 1st avenue. Also Bed bath & beyond with good prices for drug store items is 61st/1st. Subway is on Lexington, buses are closer. My concern would be safety if I were walking on the street late evening because except for the cars, no foot traffic.
I found that a dead zone. Just not a lot of life, not too many stores. You have to walk to first ave just to get some civilization. Its sorta quiet, but not in a good way.
In terms of park, there is the almost empty park at 61-62 and York. Decent. But not much life.
and thats a hike from the subway.
I forgot to mention that Gourmet Garage is on East 64th Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Also there's a playground on 1st Avenue between East 67th and East 68th Street which is usually pretty busy.
