How does outdoor space factor into cost/sq foot?

When you are figuring cost per square foot...how do you calculate outdoor space? I was told your outdoor space is worth half. So if your inside space is 1000 sq ft and you have 500 sq ft of outdoor space you would figure 1250 total square feet and then divide that by your purchase price? Anyone else agree or disagree?
