Discussion about
I will organize a get-together sometime in the new year.
happy new year! it's soooo beautiful out right now.
I have to get groceries :(
you can't have them delivered? go to whole foods (although my deliveries are always at the very end of the four-hour delivery window). the nice thing about trader joe's is they will let you select your delivery time and they keep the frozen foods in a freezer. so you can have them arrive when you know you'll want to be there.
but yes, snow is horribly inconvenient, and a pain in the ass afterwards if there is any accumulation. we're going out tonight for the first new year's eve out in years, and i'm increasingly certain it will be a nightmare. taxis, footwear, etc. but right this second it is pretty.
Aboutready...has the court order taken effect in PCV? I keep calling about an apartment but they aren't renting...Happy New Year to you and all the SE posters..
I can, but I'm kinda nutty about my groceries.
julia, you're on the wrong thread my sweets. for pcv, at least (although i myself veered of course with the snow issue). i'm ready, willing and able to discuss the issue on the pcv/st thread however.
and a very happy new year to you as well!!
if you are not usung fresh direct make that your new years resolution!!! granted it's not next day but you can place your order fairly late the eve before, In a pinch like today food emporium is inline/same day delivery.
happy new year to all!
I think my resolution will be to do more online grocery shopping (have to admit, in all my years here, I've done Fresh Direct once and that's it). I do enjoy physically going to the Red Hook Fairway though, so it may be a hard habit to kick. Happy New Year to all of you!
I'm not a FD fan - I had to use it when I was bed-bound, and there isn't enough product choice. Besides, futile as it may be, I'm trying to keep bricks-and-mortar businesses alive in the neighborhood.
I'm headed up to Fairway Harlem to do a big shop. Wish me luck on the roads (NYCers and tourists don't know how to drive in the snow!)
i did fairway for years. i still have bruises. i'll have to get in the car and try the red hook one. i've been meaning to for quite some time. i like keeping the little guys alive, but believe it or not, TJs back in the day was one of the little guys where i lived.
Red Hook is VERY nice, but man, the traffic there and back is so unpredictable. I'm looking forward to TJ (but am I subsidizing some weird German family?)
hfscomm, give it a rest, at least for a day.
nyc10023, how do you get down to Red Hook. It's an easier drive for me from Williamsburg - the BQE traffic can be pretty bad at rush hour, but it can definitely avoided if you know the streets of Brooklyn.
Happy New Year to all!!
I don't understand, nyc10023, how you can say that Fresh Direct doesn't have enough choice!! Are you kidding, they have amazing choices along with great organic products. I don't know what I would do without this company, they are fabulous. You don't have to worry about carrying anything...they do the heavy work for you!
cheers to nyc10023 for supporting local business! i try to do the same and would always rather pay a little more than run the risk of losing these essential places forever..
People --- make sure you tip your FD (etc) deliverers. They get badly tipped and they earn very little. Please tip them! Especially if you live in a walk-up and they're carrying stuff up a bunch of flights.
I don't do FD anymore tho I did it TONS for a few years -------- I'm with glamma and nyc10023 ------ support the local little businesses.
NYC10023, can't wait for the next get-together. I'm with you on FD - the produce was pretty bad, delivery fees high enough and the prices about the same as traditional grocery stores, plus breaking down all those boxes was a real pain. Using a combination of WF and greenmarkets now.
Bjw: I always try to go to Red Hook Fairway when I need to go to Ikea. I've tried a couple of routes, depending on time of day. If cross-town is fast, then I go via Queensboro and get on the BQE. Or go via Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. I have a carpenter who works out of Brooklyn Navy Yard and I had to see him a few times, so I'll hit Red Hook after that.
Prada: I wanted to make chicken cutlets with porcini mushrooms, the other day when I was bed-bound and FreshDirect didn't have porcini mushrooms. Also wanted mini-bagels, and they didn't have them. And I wanted a whole (non-frozen) turkey and they didn't have them. Also, the brand selection isn't great for non-perishables. Recycled toilet paper, for instance.
Ev: I love the greenmarkets.
Hmm. I've never tried FD. I can't imagine someone else selecting my produce (or meats, or...) for me. My friends swear w/ 2 under 2 i'll give in and use it. So far, i've been quite content ramming my double wide through WF and 70's Fairway :). My apologies to all in advance :)
Happy New Year everyone!
