Discussion about
Which of these two is a better location: Wall Street in the Financial District or West 34th Street - West Chelsea (literally right next to the West Side Highway) I'm young, attending NYU, like going out, etc and need to pick from these two. Thanks.

Ok, West 23rd makes more sense than West 34th. (For a second there I thought you were going to move into the Javits Center.) I like West 23rd -- there's a nice park there, a soccer field, Chelsea Piers, the High Line, the Half King, etc. There are also some clubs right in the area, and it's easy enough to get from there into other interesting areas. (There's also what used to be a strip club in a "by the hour" motel, and a storage warehouse across the street -- but that's what you call "flavor.") It can sometimes be packed with the rabbit fur coat brigade, but otherwise it's nice.

I don't spend much time on or near Wall Street, but it's more likely to be deserted at night and on the weekends, but likewise within an easy trip to more interesting areas. I'd probably prefer the Chelsea spot -- but everyone's different, and it's probably worth visiting both to see them.

However...a big thing to think about is your daily commute. If you're commuting from the apartments over by the West Side Highway, you'll need to take the M23 bus to 6th Ave. and then the F,V down to Fourth Street. Not terrible, but does require a transfer. If you go from Wall Street, you should be able to walk to the A,C,E or R,W. You might want to HopStop both routes and see which is longer from the two addresses. (Or you could bike -- both are easily within biking distance of NYU.)

Good luck.

@chrisyslslr: It is -- but the redeveloped part of the High Line stops at 20th. (They're currently working on the area above 20th.) Still, it's not far away.

Bob, um, the C/E also go to W4 and are two long blocks closer to West 23rd St.

@zinka: Oh, yeah -- good point. I work on 6th, so the F,V's what I usually take. Forgot about the 8th Ave. line.

"'I'm young, attending NYU"

They have dorms for that, you know.
