What should i insist on in a contract between me and the architect? I got 2 proposals - one is a 2 pager and the other one runs 7 pages. which is standard? Thanks.

The AIA (the American Inst. of Architects) publishes form contracts. When I did my contract, I looked through the AIA form contract (which my architect let me go through) to see if there were any "standard" protections in the AIA contract that I wanted to have included in my contract. Ultimately, there was nothing particularly controversial about the process, but I think it's a good idea to look through the form contracts to see what the architect included in yours, and what he/she didn't.

AIA also has model contracts for your relationship with the contractor, which you might consider looking through as well.

I've never worked with an architect, but I can't imagine a form contract that's published by AIA fairly balances the interests of both parties.

Assuming you also will be using a contractor, this thread had helpful suggestions:
