Discussion about
Hi, not sure anyone knows the answer to this but here goes. My pre-war apartment needs to be updated in terms of wiring/electric (cant run 2 ACs at one, lightbulbs always blowing out) I want the coop to pay for it. They say its the owners responsibility. HOWEVER, if I can show that the wiring is not compliant with NYC code, can I force them to pay for the upgrade? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

No, code doesn't require existing properties to upgrade, unless a major remodel is done to a room / apartment.

Dammit! Thanks alanhart. I love my coop but they are a huge PITA about this issue. I guess I will have to shell out the $6K myself.

the wiring inside your apartment is your responsibility, not the coops.

"They" == you. If "they" -- the co-op -- pays for yours, then the co-op has to pay for everybody's, which means all the shareholders pay their share of the whole whack. Better for each shareholder to pay for their own.

That way you can be more or less elaborate in your electrical work, and pay accordingly.

"the wiring inside your apartment is your responsibility, not the coops."

Ditto.
