Discussion about
What are places you guys would recommend to look for a large selection of bath fixtures, kitchen fixtures, and lighting that is reachable from Manhattan? Pricing is not as important because I can always comparison shop online. Sometimes you need to touch and feel, and see it in real life! I am finding a large selection online, but only a small selection in stores but it seems like I'm not looking... [more]

I second "Lighting by Gregory" for modern fixtures. Also, try "Lightformss" in chelsea if it's closer and you're just looking.

For lighting, THE source in NYC is Lighting By Gregory for all styles. They carry 90% of what is available. Stores near them on Bowery are easy enough to pop into once you are down there. Gracious Home has a lighting selection and also happily charges 25-50% more thaqn anyone else. On line, look at www.ylighting.com , www.lightinguniverse.com , and www. lumens.com . Personally, for prewar designs (although they do other types) I love designs by Hudson Valley Lighting Co.

For bathroom fixtures, visit the Manh Center for Kitchens and Baths (MCKB) in Chelsea as well as poking around Simon's Hardware's bath section.

Kitchen appliances in NYC can be viewed at PC Richard, Krups, Gringer and Sons, MCKB, and in the D&D Building in midtown which is open to the public.

For lighting I would also recommend Lee's Studio on West 57th Street (above the art supply store). In addition to all the items they display, they also have catalogs for many other styles and manufacturers, including some that you might otherwise need to buy through a showroom with a decorator. Such as Hansen. And their prices are about what the decorator would pay before any mark-up.

People there are nice and quite helpful. I once had a salesman spend a serious amount of time on the phone with me, walking me through how to change a tricky desk lamp bulb. He couldn't have been more patient with my incompetency.
