I have a friend who just starts with "so, what are you wearing?" and gets worse and worse till they hang up. Have another one who picked up from him and just starts right off with "tell me what your ***** smells like".

Doesn't matter if the caller is male or female, they get creeped out anyway.

Or, if you prefer, simply ask for their number and tell them you'll call them back.

But you can save yourself a lot of trouble by not picking up calls from blocked numbers in the first place.

I keep getting an automated call that says "Please hold for the next availbale operator" as soon as I pick up. I have no idea who they are since I immediately hang up.

I think the best you can do is register at donotcall.gov and also individually with all the companies you do business with. Here's what the gov says-

"Q:If I register my number on the National Do Not Call Registry, will it stop all telemarketing calls?
A:No. Placing your number on the National Do Not Call Registry will stop most telemarketing calls, but not all. Because of limitations in the jurisdiction of the FTC and FCC, calls from or on behalf of political organizations, charities, and telephone surveyors would still be permitted, as would calls from companies with which you have an existing business relationship, or those to whom you’ve provided express agreement in writing to receive their calls. However, if you ask a company with which you have an existing business relationship to place your number on its own do-not-call list, it must honor your request. You should keep a record of the date you make the request. "

Riversider can't register with the big government do not call list. That would be Socialism and he is against that. If the invisible had of the free market dictates that he must answer telemarketer calls everyday, than that is what he must do.

How come socialists don't understand what socialism is?

Maybe thats the only way they get supporters.

This might not work for everyone, but I switched to a VOIP line with Vonage years ago, and never had to worry about telemarketers or any kind of phone solicitations again, which is probably one of my favorites thing about it.
