Discussion about
I recently moved into a new apartment with a large terrace. I've been looking for someone to design the landscaping and help procure and install the planters and plants (preferrably someone with knowledge of wind/weight considerations on a NYC terrace). So far I have a quote from Chelsea Garden Center which I found very expensive. Any other places I should try? I should add that I don't have a green thumb in the least bit, so I like the idea of a one-stop shop that can do the whole project and suggest relatively low maintenance plants.

I'm not sure if they're cheap, but I've been impressed by http://theorganicgardenernyc.com/home.html

I adore Roger Miller (Roger Miller Gardens) - but he's expensive. He does spectacular terraces and rooftops, but he will go for the top quality of EVERYTHING.

For the roof of 771 West End, we hired landscape designer Adrian Smith - I loved his simple, easy to maintain ideas. And he was flexible and understanding dealing with costs and also with board issues, etc.

What about just buying planters w/o a landscape architect? Anyone have any ideas about where to buy them or have them made?

Actually I just asked Adrian that - am buying a terrace and want to reproduce when we did on the WEA roof. Custom planters are SO expensive! He suggested looking in the ever-shrinking plant district. Haven't been yet. Actually IKEA has some not-bad-looking planters, don't know how sturdy they are.

With a terrace, the issue is weight. You have to get fiberglass planters and ultra-light soil. But no umbrellas or lightweight furniture because they could blow away.

Try asmith@adriansmithlandscape.com or adriansmith@nyc.rr.com>; He was on his own and I think he's joined a larget firm. If you get in touch, tell him Laurie Pollock of 771 West End recommended you.
