Discussion about
I'd really appreciate some advice from folks who are familiar w/rentals in the UWS. My husband and I (plus new baby and small dog) live in a 2 bed/1 bath apt. Rent has been greatly subsidized by his employer. Beginning in July, we will have to pay market (or close to market) rate - $3400 (we're estimating). We thought we could find something more to our liking - esp in terms of location. We're... [more]

West Side is more casual, East Side is more rigid. East Side still has that society aspect lacking on the west side. The area you describe has access to two parks, which is very good for family activities and/or just strolls. Also very good access to 9W if you like biking.

Yes, Riversider - parks, bicycling - that's why we want to move to the westside. Problem is finding a place in our price range/location. Any particular buildings you'd recommend?

This apartment looks a little tight, but here's a 2/2 on a high floor in a convenient building for $3600. It's worth if for the use of the building gym with great 25 yard pool. Convenient to new subway station, blocks from both parks and new whole foods.

CLSM I live on 96th btwn CPW and Col. the link to the building above is a good start. That building is on the corner of 96th and b'way across from the subway station and all buses crosstown and b'way. Maybe you should contact a broker or walk the west side in the nabe. that you want to live. Their are a lot of available apts. that you can get in that price point. Good luck!

Agreed. Sounds like riversider learned the "difference" from the movie Metropolitan.

I actually find UWS stifling, like hawaiian shirt fridays. "look how casual we are", but ends up being anything but.

Funny thing is, I've heard UWSers complain that there are too many sports bars on the UES... that doesn't match up either.

UES is bigger and has more stuff, that alone makes a sizable difference in what your choices are, what places/types of people you want to spend time with.

Also, the UES has a bigger range of prices. It has the mega expensive co-ops, but actually also has some of the cheapest apartments in town if you stray far from 5th avenue. A lot of good value in the 80s, even not too far from the subways.

Yes, some days I think to myself... I wish there were a park or two anywhere near the East Side.

Thanks PMG & Holmes - the apt is too small for us. We've tried walking around streets we particularly like and saw a few places w/brokers - but they were all too small.

Somewhereelse - I should state that we're pretty far east - so not very close to central park. So being close to two major parks on the westside would be great.
