Discussion about
deep breaths.... N.Y.U. hopes to start building on superblocks within 2 years By Lincoln Anderson After New York University’s NYU 2031 expansion plan was recently leaked — by an unknown source — to two local newspapers, one of the newspapers’ articles, and most of the subsequent media reports, focused on the university’s relatively far-off hopes to develop up to 1 million square feet of... Well, if Bloomy can buy the Mayor's Office, NYU is going to end up owning Washington Square Park. They have already consistently gotten away with overbuilding the local FAR, height, etc. restrictions for decades.

I went to NYU in the 80s -- washington square park was full of drugs, SoHo was abandonned artist space and NYU has invested an incredible amount of money and energy into the village. A vibrant, academic campus in NYC -- much better than the crap that was there. Thank you NYU -- For adding to the NYC economy and safety.

So the dogs get the Mercer/bleecker playground, and the Key park is built over? Try again. They will need to preserve a large kids' playground, to serve the families who live in the Washington Square Village and the Silver Towers. Especially if they will have a school, open space is crucial.

"I went to NYU in the 80s -- washington square park was full of drugs, SoHo was abandonned artist space "

That is just plain nutz. Soho was already WELL into trendy in the 80's. Soho wasn't "abandoned artist space" much past the 60's. In the 70's it became un-abandoned (i.e. occupied) artist space. In fact, the Loft Board was established in 1982 because landlords had already seen how much it was worth to evict artists living in IMD buildings and replace them with higher paying tenants. Hardly the type of thing which happens in a neighborhood full of "abandoned" space. The area was actually targeted for redevelopment by the city as far back as 1962.

"much better than the crap that was there."

Like the Poe House and Provincetown Playhouse?

I think she meant abandoned BY artists.

But I agree with your last line, and will add that NYU has been a plague on that neighborhood, and on the East Village, and [ironically] also single-handedly destroyed the entire neighborhood surrounding their main campus in the Bronx when they shut it down in the 1950s. I've long felt that if they want to continue to expand in their big ongoing competition with their peer institution, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Phoenix , they should pack up again and return to the nice spacious University Heights campus.

i have many issues with this, here is just one. when all the new "open public spaces" are filled with NYU undergrads, how will it be possible for anyone else to actually enjoy them?

"I think she meant abandoned BY artists."

If that's the case it's even MORE nutz.

"when all the new 'open public spaces' "
Anyone who thinks there will actually be an INCREASE in open PUBLIC spaces involved in any NYU plan has drunk the "NYU Cool-aid"

Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on property value in the area. Specifically Lagauardia Place. THere are a couple places on the market on Laguardia Place. One which I saw and was a very nice apt. and priced as expected for a new property on the market if things were to stay as they are but way overpriced considering what is to occur on Laguardia Place. When will it be safe to buy on laguardia Place considering the possibility of changes to the NYU development. Not till 2031??????? Any thoughts on that?
