Discussion about
HI - My son has been accepted to HCHS. We are being told that the kids spend 3 -5 hours each night on homework. Could someone weigh in on this? Could this be true?

Not sure how things have changed in the past ten years (i graduated from HCHS in 2000). Seems high to me, especially in 7th and 8th grade. When i was there, 7th and 8th grade was more to get acclimated to the HCHS community. Also note that the grades from 7th and 8th grade are not included in transcripts that are sent to colleges. But 3-5 hrs when in 9-12 grade is expected. Would not hesitate to send your son there because of length of homework. Going to Hunter was one of my greatest experiences. Grade size is small so I've had great relationships with teachers and especially classmates. You're with the same class for 6 years, so everyone knows everyone else at the whole school. It is a very close community and in my honest opinion head and shoulders above other middle/high schools, both public and private.

Classroom size is probably around 25ish... i was talking more about the size of the grade as a whole... when i entered 7th grade, the incoming class was probably 175 by the time. By the time my class graduated 6 years later, it was probably more like 140 (people move away and some decide to go to stuy). But again, i entered the 7th grade in 1994, so things may have changed. My guess is not so much though.

in comparison, other middle schools in the area have classes that are 800 or more

I would suggest posting this on urbanbaby.com or youbemom.com as you may get more feedback. I think most NYC schools give at least 3 hrs of homework in 8th grade sadly. (CONGRATULATIONS btw - getting accepted into Hunter is a huge accomplishment!)

awesome place--dont blink--send your son--if hes not happy, he can switch to stuy or an independent school for 9th grade--if your son was able to test into hunter he will likley easily glide into any other school for ninth grade if unhappy--he will likely be very happy as will you--hunter has a pure meritocrtic admissions process which insures that only extremely bright kids attend--they lose a couple oof kids a year to stuy and all or most would qulify to switch if they chose to--there is def a lot of work, but any good school will challenge your son---class iszes are bigger than the independent schools at 29 per class but if that becomes a problem, he switches--if the cost of independent schools is a nonissue with you then you have more of a choice--if not, do not fail to exercize this free option for an amazign experience for your son--my direct knowledge of hunter speaks of a school filled with very bright inertesting young people--about incredible kids not big wealth or resources---congrats to your son

I remember when I was in high school homeowrk only took me 60-90 minutes. I would often do my homework with the tv on. I had a light work load since I stayed clear of the advanced classes, so I made honor roll every single semester for all 4 years.

You may find this thread worth reading. http://streeteasy.com/nyc/talk/discussion/18546-hunter-college-high-school-opinions

As with many threads here, though, it becomes fairly toxic and silly at times, but there may be info that you find helpful. My relative did accept for the coming fall and we all couldn't be happier and more excited. Good luck with your son--opportunities like this can change a child's life in many wonderful ways.

the toxicity in that thread was about how much better stuy is than hunter, for a few alums of stuy--moot here as your son can go to stuy if he feels that a better option after trying two years at hunter--

congrats to both these kids

Kyle happy to hear that your young relative will be going to Hunter. I understand its a special place and special experience, which is hardly meant to degenerate other selective schools one would be proud to have their kids attend.

GVlifer congratulations to you as well. Based on your screenname, can I assume the young man in question is a fellow PS 41 almum?

consider that the same homework that takes some kids 3-5 hours might take others 1-2 (or more)

congrats, btw...
