Discussion about
I am concerned that there may be lead in my building's tap water, especially because it is well known the pipes are old a mess. If there are abnormally/unhealthy levels of lead in the water, I am assuming this is clearly the coops responsibility to fix?
The building pipes? The city pipes?
If it's the city pipes that are the problem, well good luck. If it's the building pipes that are the problem, again good luck. Can you imagine the cost/mess/inconvenience of replacing a building's pipes? Talk about special assessments! Would be cheaper to buy every shareholder a water filter.
Yes was talking about building pipes...why am I not surprised to hear I am screwed either way. Reason # 6, 485, 856 never to buy a coop!
Do you really think it would be any different in a condo? PLEASE!! Some of them are newer (but not all) and some of the newer materials used in construction were and are probably worse than the older ones. Whatever problems come up in a coop will, and often do, come up in condos. Ownership structure makes no difference in this regard.
As in the PVC pipes used in newer (80's,90's and later)construction - could that be carcinogenic? Don't know what filters work on that.
ph41,
Which new construction buildings in Manhattan used PVC pipes?
Getting it tested seems pretty straightforward: http://www.health.state.ny.us/publications/2508/
