Discussion about
Can anyone point me to a professional and reliable mover? Feel free to steer me away from shady operators. I used Belkins for my last big move; the packers were amazing, but on the delivery end, the trucker called from Boston to blackmail me: $500 tip or his nephew would take my car for a spin "he lika da little conwertibal, ya know". I caved. Anyway, Belkins is off my list.

I found a great mover on Citymove. Google them. You list your move parameters and moving companies bid on the job. I chose "Excellent Quality Movers" and was totally satisfied with their service and price. No funny business, fully insured, and super efficient.

Unqualified rave: Brownstone Brothers. We had 3 experiences with them over the past year: they packed and moved us out of one apartment and into another, putting half our things into storage for a year. Then they retrieved our stored things and moved us out of a temporary place into our new home, post a renovation. They worked on a flat rate that was based on a detailed assessment of our stuff. They packed and moved (twice) our china, crystal, books, mirrors, lamps, art, and nice furniture -- not a single thing was broken or scratched. And they worked at warp speed.

And on top of it all, the crew was extremely pleasant to be around and while this may not seem meaningful -- when you're in the middle of all the stress from moving, it helps to like the people who are handling your belongings and working in your home.

Brownstone lets you use their or your insurance. You can pack or they can. Or like us, they packed some things and we did the rest. I liked the fact that their employees have been with the company for years and aren't hired day laborers because they care about their jobs and their employers' reputation.

Before hiring Brownstone we had sought 3 comparative bids and all were quite competitive (all worked on flat rates). Of the 3, we chose Brownstone because I liked their storage facilities and frankly, I liked the idea of working with a small, long-established business. After having moved twice in the last 12 months I can't say I ever want to move again, but at least our movers didn't add to any of the stress.

I was really, really happy with The Super Movers (thesupermovers.com). We just move a few neighborhoods over within Brooklyn, but they charged a flat rate and stuck to it, were relentlessly cheerful even when confronted with obstacles (we had an hour-long delay trying to resolve a MetroTech security snafu to get their truck in), and did the whole move, including deconstruction and reconstruction furniture, fast and damage free. I never, ever want to move again, but if I have to, I'm going back to them.

How much do you tip the movers? I'm going to move a few pieces of furniture into temporary storage.

I've had good experiences with OZ. I don't know if they offer packing services, I've only used them where we packed everything and they moved it. For one of our moves we stored some stuff with them for about 9 months. They are extremely efficient, and their quotes came in at or above what the final charges were. Used them 3 times, and nothing ever broke or was lost, and no games.

I've used West Side Movers several times personally, but I've also referred them many times and eveyone who has used them has been very happy. It's a small, family run business on the Upper West Side. Mike is the guy who I always use there, and Joanne is the owner.

We've also heard very good things about Brownstone Brothers, but haven't used them. We have used Big John's Moving, 1602 1st Avenue @ E84th Street, 212-472-4308, three times to move. They always came to our apartment to look at what we needed to move and then gave us an estimate which proved very accurate. No problems with furniture damage at all.

I've used Flat Rate Moving and referred them to numerous people. They were great and everybody I know who has used them has been happy. I'm actually surprised nobody has posted about them yet on this thread - lots of people in NYC use them.

I've used FlatRate 4X. No issues whatsoever. The crew didn't ask me for a tip, but I tipped approx. 30% all 4 times. I've reco'ed them elsewhere on the forum.

i moved from another state and used flatrate...they were terrific...although I was somewhat surprised when he told me how much I should tip, especially since I was going to tip more than that.

Many threads on this. Flatrate rates well repeatedly. I too used them 4 times for moves of varying complexity and they were quite good and very reasonable everytime. They negotiate prices and after a quote will reduce it 10%+ if you just ask. Storage rates are quite good.

I used Oz for recent 1br move. Originally had Flatrate quote of $615 for a midweek move. Checked with Oz out of curiosity, and they quoted $95/hr for 3 man crew midweek, estimated 3.5hrs total for uptown to downtown move. I figured even if they went over the estimated time, it was still much cheaper than $615. When I cancelled the flatrate reservation, they warned me all about how these other companies like Oz try to screw you and work slow, tack on bogus charges, etc, etc, but I took my chances with the lower rate. Glad I did. Oz guys were hustling! Made it in 3.5hrs exactly, no problems, very professional, I'd use them again definitely.

Budd Van Lines based out of NJ moved me from NYC to California. They were amazing. They packed some things and we packed others - not one thing was broken!

Don't use Moishe. They packed our stuff in the van and then jacked up the rate they had quoted to store it. We ended up having them unload it at a Manhattan Mini Storage.

We just moved a few blocks down the street and I had two quotes for the job, one from All Star and the other from West Side Movers. Both with good reviews here.

For a 2br apartment, West Side quoted $1,800 and All Star $3,200. The two advantages that All Star offered were the option not to pack our closets as they have wardrobe boxes and they also offer special moving boxes for plasma/lcd TVs.

Both estimators were friendly and professional, if the prices were closer, would have been a more difficult decision. But in this case, we went with West Side Movers.

I have to say, the crew from West Side was great. They worked quickly and were very professional. They re-wrapped most of the furniture and the plasma TV that I had already packed - they did a much better job then I did. The best part is that they had great attitude, some previous movers I had used complained all the time, but these guys seem to be happy and get along well with each other.

They told me it would take 6-7 hours and it was 6 1/2. With $150 for additional packing material, the total cost was just under $2K + 20% tip.

I am sure All Star would have done a good job too, just seemed a bit too expensive.

This is kind of an old thread, but I had good luck with Redline Movers -- great guys, very quick, not too expensive. No tricks, long lunch breaks, etc. -- just stand-up guys who get it done quickly.

And, man, were they good with tape. I don't mean that they used the appropriate amount of tape -- though they did. I mean that the guys would take a roll of tape (no tape gun), apply a strip, tear it off bare-handed, and have another strip on before you noticed. It was like watching the Tasmanian Devil do ballet (with tape). I've got to give props to people who have mastered their art -- and these guys were tape masters.

I just moved with Movers Not Shakers. They were polite and efficient, and relatively cheap. An extremely low-anxiety experience, partly because instead of boxes, they give you plastic bins - they deliver a week ahead of the move and you call them to pick them up anywhere up to a week after. The best part was not having to tape boxes! Now I have a stack of empty bins and when Elfa puts my closet together tomorrow, I will call MNS and they'll get the bins the next day. No muss, no fuss.

i used liffey movers based on the recommendation of a friend who is a building manager on ues and knows owner of liffey.move was from ues to bpc,i packed most of items in my apartment with my own boxes, they packed big items like tv and stand ,mirrors and etc, also had garment boxes.they would not take apart large wall unit, which i did with help of friend, charge for move was 1800.i think they did a good job, nothing damaged, nice guys.arrived at 9am,finished at 6pm.i am moving again, this time 2 blocks away and was surprised they were quoting 1900,i would think move being closer would be less.

If you are moving in Manhattan, Marrins' moving is the best. Check them online. Real reviews not some friends or their own postings.

Also did not like Moishe's. The movers acted like they hated their job (yes, I would too, but it's your job for God's sake), no smiles, eye-rolling when I asked them to help me lift TV into console on a swivel base (took like 2 seconds). Even though I had told their dispatcher all about the stairs into the building and told dispatcher I would be bringing plants, the movers seemed stunned and angry (!) to get the news. When they dropped something they would swear loudly in front of me (uncool). Actually, to be fair, the foreman was nice, and one of the guys was nice, but the other two made me feel guilty for moving!
