Discussion about
An apartment had a small (4x9) drywall put up many years ago in a kitchen. I'd like to remove it and renovate the kitchen by getting new appliances, and maybe changing the countertops and/or cabinets. Is there any need to get DOB approval for this type of work? How long does it take and how expensive will approval be? And, speaking of which, about how much will the work cost? I'm not looking to completely redo the kitchen, just upgrade the appliances and counters, and remove an unnecessary wall so that it provides an additional way to get from the living room to the kitchen.

Is it a co-op?

you should take a look at the building permits for your building and see if there was a permit pulled for the wall. if it was not, it is "illegal" and you "should" remove it as a good citizen. that should cost you a few hundred dollars as long as there's no electric running through it.

the counters and appliances all depend on your taste and the size of your kitchen. it can be as little as $3K to $30K.

if it’s a coop you will need to submit to the board – your scope of work and the drawings
Usually they will review it and will get back to you with the requirements
If you are building full height wall, moving the plumbing or electric – it requires a permit but the board might wave it. The board most likely will require you to use licensed labor and will request insurances in any case
