Discussion about
I need to order top down (or are they called bottom-up) shades for 10 windows in Brooklyn. Has anybody had a good experience with a contractor or shade service that they can recommend?
same question for solar shades...
Can't speak to a resource in Brooklyn, but in Manhattan, Metropolitan Window Fashions is very reliable and resourceful. They have the full selection of Hunter Douglas products plus have local suppliers for products like solar shades. Nice people, good service and competitive prices. Maybe they also do work in Brooklyn....
We just had them do wood blinds and solar shades and the price included measuring, fabrication and installation. They made decorative suggestions and were really pleasant to work with. Window treatments are never cheap (why, oh why, is that the case?!) but if you consider all that can go wrong with window treatments due to measuring wrong or a clumsy installation, we were delighted by the result.
We worked with their Upper West Side store at 469 Amsterdam Ave. Our sales person was Janet Webster and we loved her. There's also a shop on the UES at 189 79th St. windowfashions.com
If these folks don't work in Brooklyn, maybe Brownstoner.com has some resources. Hope this helps.
solar shades are great, do not use nyc window on w 72 st, they have a great product but their install is lacking. they had to come to my apt numerous times to fix little problems.
Have had experience working with two Blkn based shades companies. They both did a great job for many units in Forte at a very reasonable price. You can find their inof on the "Forte integrated" thread. Good luck!
I used this guy for wooden blinds and was very happy. They had a pretty good variety so I'm sure they'll have what you are looking for.

I used a guy named David that I found from this site- you can do a search. I had him come in and measure - then I ordered the blinds online and when they came in he came and installed them. I paid him a very reasonable fee and saved around 50% on the blinds. I got up downs too
I can't tell you who to use, but I can tell you not to use Gracious Homes. I had a bad experience trying to order blackout blinds from their store. They sent two workers to measure windows and then promptly lost the measurements. And it continued from there - I'll spare you the rest of the story. NextEra, thanks for mentioning the UES shop. I often pass the store and have wondered if its a good resource.
Has anyone purchased Lutron motorized blinds or a similar product for living room windows?
Has anyone gotten the window treatment from horizonnyc? I'm trying to get motorized blinds. Any recommendation?
I talked to 3 groups about motorized solar shades, including Horizon. Horizon was great. They were very knowledgeable and professional. I highly recommend talking to Zvi at 24th Street. Ultimately, I went with a motorized Lutron system, which Horizon is not a dealer. For that setup, I used Norman Rosenberg at Rosenberg Windows, http://rosenbergwindows.com/. You deal direct with the owner. His price was good and his install guys did a great job. Bottom line for me was Lutron (Rosenberg) vs. Somfy (Horizon). I went with Lutron. Lutron has an integrated motor/shade setup, the shades themselves are much better than Hunter Douglas (or others), and their motors are quietest in the industry. Google Lutron Somfy and you'll see a lot of discussion on the two motors.
I would recommend the person that did mine, but alas, they did a @#$@TY job
We recently ordered top-down/bottom-up Levelor roman shades through Lowe's in Brooklyn. Their price was excellent (significantly cheaper than Levelor direct) and we are very happy with the finished product. A caveat though: their computer system is slow and takes forever -- if you are ordering 10 windows of different sizes be prepared to spend the several hours there going over the info. They will send someone to measure, but you must go to the store to place the order. Because it took us so long we missed the fact that one of the shades that eneded up on our order was wrong (not top-down). To their credit, Lowe's took it back and sent us the correct shade, however.
Thank you. The online articles about Lutron and Somfy do not note much difference in noise level between Lutron and Somfy. I did check out rosenbergwindows.com and I was impressed with how quiet the Lutron shades were. Do you have an idea how loud Somfy is compared to Lutron?
