Discussion about
Hey everyone, First time poster and soon to be first time renter. Me and my friend are looking for a 2 BR. Nothing spectacular, and seeing as our combined budget is somewhere near 2.2k-2.4k max we obviously don't want to go the broker route and I've been researching renting directly from a landlord. I have heard horror stories of scams where you pay application fees and they just run off with your money. Does this happen frequently? Are there any tell-tale signs I should look for in order to avoid falling prey to something like this (or any other scams?). Thank you.

If the listing agent refuses to take you directly to the apartment for a showing, and rather insists that you come first to their office, which is a like a linoleum and formica trading floor, it's a scam.

anyhwere downtown to midtown. We don't want to go too far north. We'd ideally like to be near the 1 line. Again, I know for that price we're not to expect anything amazing (and I know we could probably get something on the Upper West Side that'd fit our criteria but yea, we don't want anything too far up).

PErsonally I'm totally tired of all of this. Rental is all a scam on you with the fees and slimy people and then every month just totally throwing everything away to your landlord who is raking it in. It doesn't make an ounce of sense to me any more.

Try: http://www.nybits.com/

think you can only get a converted 2br, walk-up for that price. No more than 900 sq ft.
