Discussion about
A friend of mine lives in a building where there are 9 units. There is a garage where there are 9 parking spots. The parking spots were designed to fit 9 small to maybe midsize cars. Unfortunately, everyone is getting big to really big cars. Some get extra large cars because of their children. As a result, it is impossible to fit these 9 large cars. There is a feeling that if parking lines were... [more]

The garage is indoors and at first everyone rotated where they parked. Then to make life easier, everyone had assigned parking. The problem occurred when more than one person got a larger car. Then everyone wanted to get larger cars.

Can you please give me the names of these people? The building is in NYC. My friend wants a consultant to make recommendations. They are willing to pay for the advice/consultation.

I know this doesn't help but it bothers me.

How about people stop being idiots and not get a huge car in NYC... seriously? There's a real need to have a huge car in NYC?

well... you can actually make a case for the larger car in Manhattan. In outer boroughs, where you might use the car over the course of a week, and park outside, I get the smaller car thing.

But if you're in an area where you need a garage anyway - in many Manhattan neighborhoods its just not worth it to make less than minimum wage moving your car around every day - it can make sense.

If you aren't using it for daily trips, but insteads its for weekends and such, say you have a hamptons house, it can make more sense to fit all the kids or stuff or whatever.

I think your outrage is misplaced... I agree that fewer folks should have cars, period, in Manhattan. But for those that do, the profile might actually make having the larger car make more sense.

actually, the less likely you are to use the car the MORE likely you are to get/need a large car.

Small cars are great for everyday needs like commuting and shopping. If you want to go on a long drive with the family for a vacation then a large car that can handle the whole family, their luggage, the bikes, the beach equipment, the camping equipment, etc, you want to have one single car that can handle it all. You don't care that it is less efficient, after all if you need two 30 mpg cars to go on vacation then the single 18 mpg tank is easier and more efficient.

Yes I see that came across as rage-filled lol. Not meant to be quite so harsh. With that said, what exactly is a big car then? I assume a big car is large full size sedan at least, probably an explorer or something.... I see the reasons, but seems more like rationalizing it rather than the other way around.

To each his own... the funny thing is also the "me too" attitude the building has amongst themselves when one gets a bigger car.

Sometimes it isn't a matter of "me too" but of a failure of imagination amongst the followers. Often people don't figure out an option until they have seen someone else come up with it and only then do they see the rationality of that option.

Just as most people during the energy inflation of 2007-2008 automatically assumed that smaller and more efficient was an "obvious" choice, others calculated how they use their vehicles and realized they were better off with one big vehicle.

The smaller and more specialized a vehicle is, the more likely it is to be a 2nd or 3rd car for someone, especially in the rest of the US where they don't have to worry about where to park it when they aren't using it.

now that kids are older and wife has been offloaded, i no longer drive a big car
but (somewhat painfully i admit) i have to agree with swe

it aint remotely rationalizing

what's with the me too comment? unable to read that those with big cars have gotten them because they need room for their kids and attendant gear?

and thx for looking out for the planet...as a greenie i take comfort in the fact that i drive 3-4000 mi/yr max

idiot

Thank you so much for all the responses.....however, the question is:

Does anyone know who or what company can be paid to help "redesign" the garage/parking spaces.

I also may have gotten the story wrong...maybe only 2 or 3 people have the large cars and this impacts negatively on the egress and ease of entering and leaving the garage.

Therefore, does anyone know what company can be consulted to see if the garage space can be better used/allocated. Maybe a parking lot/space engineer? Names of such companies would be much appreciated.

I agree that some people buy megatrucks just for ego or whatever. That is certainly in there.

But, when I am making a trip, I like doing it with a bunch of friends. And its usually a longer drive.
Driving to fairway, who cares. Get the zip car, or the tiny car. Its such a tiny deal. And nice to have a beater you don't worry about getting dinged.

But driving to the Hamptons in traffic, it is nice to have some space and a nice ride and be able to take whomever you want. And you are less likely to have something broken off or scratched.

Of course, if you buyt he mega SUV and you are just hauling people around, then its just a minivan you are driving.

"Big Car" is a broad term. Are we talking a Crown Victoria type car or an Escalade?

LOL, I loved Socialist's link for a car. I will certainly buy that car when I win lotto!!

There seems to be a lot of comments about how my friend's neighbors should NOT have large cars. I personally think that they are all "lucky" to be property owners....much less to also have/OWN a parking space as well.

However, as a friend, I do not pass judgement (good way to lose friends) I am just trying to help. The question is does anyone else know of any company that specializes in designing/optimizing spaces (especially garages)
