Discussion about
I currently rent a room in a condo in Morningside, and have been living here for about 1.5 years. I'm hoping to move soon, with a friend, but my parents help with my rent and I don't currently work. They don't make the ridiculous amount of money usually required to be a guarantor, so I wonder if you guys may be able to point me in the direction of management companies, buildings, brokers, etc that are a little more accommodating...especially if you have excellent credit and are willing to put down a bit more up front. So basically, my question is...what options are usually available to people who don't meet income requirements and don't have guarantors? We like Hell's Kitchen the best, but obviously can't be picky and would consider anywhere in the city. Thanks.

You can always try using this service. However, without a job you may not be able to qualify for anything, excellent credit or not.

You're completely out of luck unless you can afford to pay the price of a year's lease in advance. Otherwise, there's no way a MANHATTAN landlord will rent to you when you don't have a job.

Are you a student? Perhaps your school has a housing office with suggestions. Otherwise, subletting a room from someone who wants a roommate sounds like the way to go. Maybe understanding more about your situation would help: are you out of a job right now, have a disability, student, etc?

"I'm hoping to move soon, with a friend..."

Doesn't sound like you are being forced to move. How about staying where you are until YOU and your friend can AFFORD to move.

Let's get back to the topic at hand. How much do I get a week on the dole?

If you are on the dole, can you meet the income requirements?
