Discussion about
I have a garbage disposer (InSINKERATOR) under my kitchen faucet. Last night I discovered that the bottom started leaking and it's time to replace. I've decided to just replace the unit with regular pipes. Before I contact my Super in the building, can you please tell me if this should be covered according to Manhattan coops? The Super sometimes charges for things that "don't belong to the coop" but it is really up to whatever rules he makes, it seems. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Any pipes outside the wall are your responsibility. In my co-op plumbing the parts and labor for work like that is charged back in the next maintenance bill. That way the co-op as a whole isn't paying for stuff the individual shareowners (especially the sponsor) should be covering.
Garbage disposal, lucky you! Is it legal? If so, I'd recommend keeping it. It's a fantasy for most New Yorkers....
concur w/lad - give up the gd? Nevah.
NYCDowntown: Hire a plumber who has a license and insurance. Research on SE threads for honest plumbers. Pay the plumber that you hire. Don't fall for (what Alanhart calls) "The super special".
Super Special: huge caulk joints replace grout, replace plumber's putty, replace insulation, replace sealant, replace wood, replace masonry, replace steel, et cetera.
Not sure what lad meant ... garbage disposals used to be illegal in NYC (at least Manhattan, anyway) but are now allowed. However, some coops still ban them.
If you replace your disposer, don't cheap out -- go for max horsepower and also for the quietest available. The weaker ones jam up and need a lot more servicing.
But first I'd call InSinkErator and ask if the bottom leaks because of a routine maintenance item like a gasket, or because it's vibrated loose a bit and can just be tightened up periodically. I'm just guessing about these possibilities.
I highly doubt that the bottom is leaking. More likely a gasket -- or far more likely the dishwasher inlet -- and the water is running down the side of the unit. Before you go too crazy, get yourself a screwdriver and tighten the clamp on the dishwasher inlet and the screws that mount the unit to the drain. This might even qualify as a super special.
