Discussion about
in a condo is it customary to get permission before doing any work in your unit, such as built in shelves? is it possible to be denied?

Customary to at least ask. I used to review these for a few condo buildings, and many people would understandably not other for things like built-ins. Often the project grows, or there is construction garbage, odors from finishing, etc. You will find the super and in many cases the board, much happier if you ask.

They can always tell you it's not needed and they will be happy that you asked, and tend to be more understanding when things don't go as planned.

Denied...rarely in a condo.

In my experience you need to get approved for everything, just for having workers in the building.

If they won't be bringing much in the way of materials, just give the super notice that you're having work done on whatever day. Tell him they might want to put up the move-in protectors in the elevator. Otherwise no condo is going to care about built ins. Major work yes, but built ins is comparable to furniture move-in.

I would make sure as with 80% of the buildings I know they require the liabilty insurance and wrokers comp of the company that's doing the move or working. It of course depends on what kind of building you live in. They do this for example if you have wallpaper in your hallways and a worker or mover damages it the building has no recourse but if liability insurance is issued they can have it fixed without costing the building money

thanks. I am actually not using a contractor, but a family member to help me do wall mounted shelving entertainment center from ikea. so there will not be a truck delivery nor lumber or staining going on.
i think there is a work to be performed form to be filled out, as noted the building needs to know who is in the building and protect the elevator. I just didn't want to be turned down, especially since it is heavy materials being put on the walls and the fact that it is being done by us personally.

I would actually think that you do not need to notify if you are just doing wall unit yourself. Normally it would be if you are having delivery of the IKEA stuff would you need to let them know. but if you are going to bring in yourself unless you have a very strict building there is nothing to even tell anyone.
