Discussion about
There are some towns in the midwest where the median home is less than $100K. Why not just buy one there and retire instead of slaving away at a boring job just so I can afford to live in New York City?

there are some beautiful old suburbs in the midwest, gross point, mi and changrin falls and gates mills, oh, come to mind. but the midwest is just rotting away. there is something so hopeless and depressing about these once thriving cities. i get what you're saying though, the good parts of the midwest are can be stunning. very equestrian and quietely grand in a way that rarely exists in the ny burbs.

There is no point, other than to test the limits of human suffering. Get the hell out of here before you fall in love with a smart and driven banker and your stuck here for eternity acting like your somehow better than the average midwesterner!

Have to say, people in NYC today cannot drive.
And everyone is extra slow, heat should make everyone drive faster....like a lizzard.

Bob, You don't need to move to the midwest. You can find homes for $100K in Pennsylvania , keep your highly paid(Ahem!)job in NY and commute...

"Because the interesting jobs are in New York City."

Unfortunately OTHER people have those jobs and I just have some boring cubicle job (where the only consolation is that I get to post on this forum on my employer's clock).

"The Onion was apparently listening:"

Wow, I'm famous!

"You can find homes for $100K in Pennsylvania , keep your highly paid(Ahem!)job in NY and commute"

That commute would suck the big one.

Hmmm...

Is this is some lousy neighborhood where I'd get mugged if I walked outside at night?

Oh, the catch is that you have to be at least 55 to live there.

""You see this?" added McQuade, pointing at a real estate listing for a duplex in Hagerstown, MD. "Two bedrooms, two baths, a den—a fucking den—and a patio. Twelve hundred a month. That's total, not per person.""

LOLOL!

That one got me.

Check out what you can get for roughly $1700/month in Pittsburgh: www.corkfactorylofts.com

If you don't like your job and you don't particularly like NYC, I think you've answered your own question. For you, there is no point. Given how much time people spend at their jobs, you should probably figure out something you like doing better and then figure out if you can support yourself in NYC doing so; if not, move somewhere where you can.

Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

New Yorkers tend to be workaholics, and most New York employers feed on this. It's now EXPECTED of a growing majority of New York professionals to work a minimum of 10 hours a day, and if you work in BigLaw or IB, it's more like TWELVE hours a day.

At that point, you'd damn well better love your job, because that's all your life is: work.

And at that point, what's the point of living in New York anyway? You're certainly not enjoying it, if all your life has become is an endless loop of work/home/work/home/work/home ....

bob_d everyone middle class is asking these things. where my parents live in the other burbs in queens everyone is packing up and leaving. lets face facts -- it only makes sense if you went to harvard law; have a great job; live like a big shot or came from some crappy 3rd world place and joined the ranks of city's working class where by comparison; public services ain't too bad. As far as a middle class is concerned -- it's just plain dumb. The only peopl who do it downtown are a bunch of people in thier 20s who moved here from Wisconsin cuz mtv told them it was cool
