I'm looking for fairly long wool rug runners and the style and material I like are the ones sold at stores like Crate & Barrel, Room & Board, Pottery Barn, etc.. The standard lengths are usually 3'x8' or 2.6'x8' and I'd like to combine 2 rug runners so that it is 3'x16'. Is there place that sews wool rugs together so that it looks like one long rug runner?
I'd have to guess every dry cleaner in the city that has a tailor can do it.
And if not, there's always 20 bucks and a little bit of your time

I suggest calling ABC carpets & ask if they could do this for you. Also, go there because they have a lot of "oddly" dimensioned runners which may work for you. IMO, ABC's inventory is amazing. If you are looking for a rug, go there.
We had the opposite situation: how to cut a 15' long runner in half after we moved and it no longer fit. We had ours done by Long Island Cleaners -- very expertly done and they pick up and deliver. But you'll want to have it done so that the seam either doesn't show or it's somehow integrated into the design, and this takes some detailed hand sewing. Our cutting-in-half cost about $175 if I'm remembering right but they did a gorgeous job. So factor the sewing cost into your overall price.
I wouldn't ask a clothing tailor to do it. The yarns and construction are really different and if it's sewn inadequately it could rip, loosen from the foot traffic, or cause a tripping accident. Just my opinion....
Also take a look at Einstein Moomjy. A number of years ago, during one of their annual sales, we got them to make a long runner for us in a custom length for a price that was comparable to prices at Crate & Barrel, etc.
Finally, it might be worth asking at the big stores (C&B, R&B, etc.) if they can do it for you or make one in the size you want. Sometimes it's surprising what a big chain can do for you.
Most carpet stores are interested in selling carpet, which makes sense. I called several places to help me cut an IKEA runner by six inches. Most turned me down, but one did not. It's in the Bronx, accessible by a very short walk from the 1 train, just a few stops from Upper Manhattan. Broadway Carpet, 5790 Broadway, 718 884 0999 Ask for Gaspar.
I would have never guessed at dry cleaners or even clothing alterations since the sewing machine isn't really heavy duty enough, but you never know. Finding out that you actually can get two or more rug runners sewn together at a relative inexpensive price is reassuring.
I'm actually doing my best to comply with the 75% rug rule in my building, even though I don't have any noise complaints against me - I am liking the warm feel on my feet. Cutting down on the number of dust bunnies is also a plus.
ABC will let you pick a material and they will build your rug... go to 23rd
ABC Home may have some answers for you. I know for sure though their markup runs 1000% in furniture. (Yes that's right I din't hit an extra zero). I doubt rugs are far behind. You may try your luck at their outlet center in the Bronx.
Nextera has some good points, and I would guess it is probably better (ease of job) to have a rug too big and have to cut, rather than combining 2.
A major factor I would consider is whether you are renting or you own your apartment. For me at least, any furnishings for a rental I have found to be restricted to the unit Im in as they just don't work in the new space I move to later. This factor should dictate your budget for this.
Have you tried googling "3 by 16 runner rug" and see where that takes you?
Here's a sample hit;

I like the texture, look, color, and wool material from stores like Crate and Barrel over the long rug runners that are offered over the web. I also want to match the wool rugs from the living room area rug with hallway rug runner. The web has the right sizes for the rug runners, but they don't have the right color and so forth as mentioned before.
I own my place and I'm decorating on my free time and it's taking so long.
