Discussion about
Hi I recently purchased a new convesion condo, it was a studio but it had enough room to create a bedroom, so I put up a wall just by myself with 2x4 and sheetrock. I did not go through the alteration process with the management company because it was done all Do-It-Yourself. But apparently I discover I am not supposed to have the wall because it is against the HVAC (is it what it's called?) system. When a super came into my apt for repair other things and he was screaming at me that it is illegal. Do I have to take it down? Anybody had a same situation? If they don't bother and I still keep the wall like that, do I have to remove it when I sell? What if I sell the apt with the wall that is not supposed to be there?
bad move.. .when you signed documents - you agreed to submit alteration agreements for such changes. . .anyway, you are definitely in the wrong.
I don't have experience with such activity though.
agree with nova....
in manhattan, buildings have certain rules and procedures in place for a reason - safety. most projects require you submit completed alteration agreements to be reviewed and approved. items such as the drywall and studs must meet certain criteria. hvac units need maintenance from time to time. if you have blocked access to the unit, then yes - not a good move.
thankfully you did not try to do any DIY plumbing or electrical work - that needs to be done by licensed professionals. nyc contractors also need to be licensed depending on the type of work that needs to be done. painters for example, do not need to be licensed.
did you DIY to save money? were you aware about the alteration process before you added the wall?
i would make nice with management and make any changes the right way and have the job completed by a professional.
it feels good to do things by the book.
