Discussion about
I applied for an apartment to rent; my parent also filled out a form as guarantor (I'm just graduated from college). Before I had a chance to hand over the check for the application fee(they wanted $100 from each of us), the management company went ahead and did the credit check and approved me for an apartment. I subsequently decided not to take it. Now they say we owe them $200. What do you think?

Both legally and morally the right thing to do is to pay them. It is wrong
to not pay people who have trusted you to act honorably.

Mom, if you filled out the forms and knew that you needed to pay the application fee why wouldn't you pay? Seems like you didn't want to pay because you decided not to take the apartment and not because they did anything wrong. Would you have paid if you decided to take the apartment?

w67thstreet, what do you think? You used to be in lawsuits with your residential tenants, and then when you rented an apartment you didn't pay the last month's rent. Where do you stand on this issue?

mom, brokers and management companies make their livelihood charging $100 or more for a $10 credit check. Not paying them for doing nothing for you is like taking cocktails right out of their babies' mouths. Shame on you.

Anyone know if you can shave a $100 or so a month off your rent if your credit is perfect and/or if you have a high multiple of the rent as income?
