it's all public stunt. the total comp is only down 10-15%. obviously the banks said "very austere" just to appease public anger.

I suppose first question for both of you, is what are you sources. Are you referring to any specific bank?

10-15% of total comp implies a lot more down as a percent of your bonus assuming salary unchanged. For example, a 1m total comp with 400 base and a 15% cut in total comp leads to a 25% reduction in bonus.

From my own experience. I am seeing numbers north of 20% on total and the portion held back has increased to a degree.

Actually reading from the last two days I think the public stunt has gone the other way where claims are made that payouts are pretty much where they were last year in total. Which I believe is misleading. They are lower in many ways.

What about buyers who aren't in the finance industry? Believe it or not, those people actually exist in NYC.

ok lets say on average holly1 has a point. but a certain portion of the buyers a dragging down that average.
