Discussion about
not on purpose mind you. I would never ever do that. A couple of months ago, we hired a broker to sell our apartment. The reason for our move - I was being transferred across the country for my job - just disappeared. I feel terrible about the time and expense our broker put in. What does one typically do in this situation?
Some sort of a nice 'Thank you' seems in order. I'd also talk the realtor up with friends & associates & perhaps send them some clients that way.
s--- happens. dont worry about it.
Say 10 Hail Marys, one Our Father and one Glory Be.
More relevent: Question to Brokers
What do you do when you can't sell an apartment after six months because you priced it too high to get the listing, fail to show up to open houses and mispell words in the apt description?
Do you send the owner a fruit basket?
So, I think nothing more than a "No need to sell my place now because xyz, thank for your help" is in order
And drdrd, why would you recommend the broker to a friend when the owner has no idea if the broker is good or not? He/she could obviously not get the deal done to date
Thanks all. To be fair @Apt_Boy, our broker didn't do any of those things. She has been nothing but helpful - that's why I feel so bad about it.
This is part of the business model, so don't sweat it. Part of the reason they charge so much is that they have to amortize cases like this. Send a fruit basket or whatever, sure, and tell them you'll be in touch for the future, but I don't think a $10K check is in order.
Brokers?
that's all the time we have.
thank you for being a contestant on 'CAN YOU SELL THIS APARTMENT'

Sounds great. It's not like Brokers have families or mortgages or anything. They just live in the office where you saw them and eat algae and plankton. In this particular case, if you liked them enough to hire them you should at least send another solid referral their way.
Alan... Penance deflation? I used to get more than that for impure thoughts in grade school,
NYCDreamer, like contemplating using sour mix instead of lemon juice in the Sisters' sidecars? No wonder.
What's wrong with eating algae and plankton?
live in the office? try under some rocks
I think honest, speedy communication so s/he doesn't spend any more time and resources, and a nice thank you note.
maly, inonada and drdrd all have the right idea.
I think a nice thank you note will do

If the broker was doing a good job, why in the world wouldn't the OP do that?
