Here was the story.. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/cozy_crazy_couple_makes_tight_studio_R15ToNFTaJE3c17zkw4efP Anyone have updates if they're still together? Any updates on the apartment?
That looks like a recipie for the birth of 'Ultimate Fighting'. Which I thought was outlawed in this state.
what the h e double hockey sticks are you doing here? Now get back over to the excelsior thread you started and then abandoned this morning.
2 points:
1) $700 maintenance on a 175sf apt, gots to be one of the highest psf in NYC
2) She is pouring the champange into a wine glass
nothing more to be said
im assuming co-op so prop tax included in maint?? whats address im too lazy to read
They seem happy from the pictures. If they were renting in that area they could get an apartment with at least triple the space and maybe a 1 bedroom. I am impressed whoever the seller was and that the new owners do not have storage units under the bed.
they're paying $1,325.98 for that size in that neighborhood. even when you take their tax deduction into account, they are around $1100. couldn't they have gotten a huge 400 sq ft studio for about the same in that area?
But if they rented, they couldn't customize it their liking like they did here!!
And the line of the article...
"It's like having a rent-controlled apartment," she said
except your maintenance will be increasing every year more than any rc apt.
and maintenance is stated as $789 in 2009, can easily $850 today

and they could have bought 8J today for $399k w/ 450 sf and only $670 maintenance

It's so cute!
Like a tiny mini Thunderdome.
It's the cats that'll do them in...
can you imagne how that place must smell after a night out for burritos and a few black bean specials??
West 110th street..they definitely could have found something bigger..
i counted the maint at $700, now they're at $1475. this smells a quick divorce or an apartment just for the cats when they live down the block.
You guys aren't giving any value to the "no board approval" . People will pay a premium for that flexibility whatever the size of the apartment.
Apt_Boy, $399k is way over twice the $150k the article says they paid for the place. Of course SE says they paid $185k, which is likely a more reliable figure. For some people, living small and cheap is more important than comfort.
PMG...but in the article, they state that they will pay off the mortgage in 2 years, so it is not like they don't have the cash for a slightly bigger place...not like they need to buy a 2mm place
and picking up your clothes on your way to work at "strategically" placed dry cleaners is not living cheap, it is living crazy
and anyone who works for a liquor company and states they buy champagne by the case and then proceeds to pour it into a wine glass is insane
Picking up clothes at "strategically" located dry cleaners is crazy. If this couple is able to collect $100 per night for two week per month through subletting to tourists, then they may have bought a good deal. Or if by living small they save enough to pick up a bargain larger apartment in a year or two and unload this place, even at a small loss, then they still did well.
House Hunters Intl had an episode about Paris apartments $200k for 150 sqft and the Americans buying it were thrilled with what they saw, of course it was in Pars.
The entire thing is nuts. Honestly, at this point, why not just move to 'Boken??
I agree.....something doesnt add up.....its like RENT a bigger apartment......sounds like they could afford a bigger apartment also......if mtce was low i could understand it but with mtce at close to 800 per month for that size.....CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!Julia...i saw the house hunters intl paris show....its unbelievable what people will pay to own........but she ended up with a decent loft size studio for 160k!
I'm not impressed. I had a 250 sq ft studio about 7 years ago on the UWS, but it had a full-sized fridge, full-sized sofa, and a 50" plasma (heh, yeah, I know), and my girlfriend lived with me. But, I did have a loft bed (like the one in the Paris House Hunters- what a joke!), so that made a huge difference.
With only 10% down, my mortgage + maint was under $1000/month (pre-tax), and I paid the most anyone had ever paid for a studio in the building.
