Discussion about
Does anyone have a recommendation in the catskills 4k/mth range? Mom/dad need decent city access (less than 2hr train/bus/car) kid needs water, dog needs squirrels.

Is the Borscht Belt still operating? Haven't been since early 80s.

Send 'em all on a cruise, gives Spinny a vacay too.

Spinny: See, this is what I don't understand about "summering" here. Take that 8k, spend it on a month in Vancouver.

23 - One of us needs to work, the other is a conniving slug, hence the requirement to be close to nyc. We came from a house on Vancouver Island before here, and one in Banff before that, so our give a shit factor seems to be lower than most.

spin, this may be up your alley. I have no affiliation, for the record. Flipkey is a decent site for this kind of thing.

cc, I know it's a bit further out than 2 hours, but this sure is a fascinating hobby of yours. Why don't you read this past Sunday's Times and get back to me on any typos and incorrect paginations?

Lots of comments and your panties seem to be in a twist, but not one actually helpful suggestion for spinny other than what I posted. You guys must be fun at weddings.

so you are a broker.

patsy says "hey do you have any places to show me at 800K?"

bj responds "sure, here's one at $1.2 million"

cc, you and wbottom weave these awesome conspiracy theories (I dispel "right-wing propaganda", I'm a broker). Is the Enquirer not taking your calls and intensely-scribbled manifestos? All this kvetching about my suggestion - why don't you let spinny decide whether it's for him instead of acting like a gd spokesperson? Or do you think you're rendering a service here?

If the board helps Spinny on this , will Spinny stop referring to himself in the third person? Or maybe Jimmy likes Elaine.

cc, actually, I've thought about it more and you're right. I would then say "bid $800k on it."

Midtowner, maybe George likes spicy chicken.

i'm not certain why i'm being helpful in this instance, but what you need to do is go through these mls databases and look on the individual real estate company's websites. if they're similar to columbia and dutchess county companies some will list summer rental opportunities. or try to ascertain who has the greatest sales volume and give them a call. most of the bigger companies have some summer rental stock. my guess is the ones near the ski areas have quite a bit.

I appreciate the links AR. We have been using VRBO but spinny has been unimpressed with the results.

does it have to be catskills? there are lake communities in the poconos that will ususally have a pool, little beach at a lake, tennis courts, stables (with sad looking horses, but still, it's nice to have the option), some have access to golf courses. i think they've been aggressively building this kind of thing out there over the last decade, so there might be some good options within 2 hrs. i know it's doable because we visited some friends at this one last summer
http://www.masthope.org/ and there was a gaggle of russian grandmothers stationed out there with the kiddies, while the parents come out on the weekends.

this is supposed to be nice but may be too far.

look in the poconos though, they have this stuff. you just need to talk to an agent out there who knows the area. it's crazy cheap and you can find a real log cabin! or at least a cute little house with a wraparound deck in the middle of the woods. good luck!

here's a link to a real estate guy specializing in the catskills. he is focused on sales but given the slowness in the market I would agree with AR that there are probably rental deals to be had.

Lucille, it has to be exactly to specifications. Not a minute over 119 away, not an inch outside the Catskills, not a dollar over $4k, and certainly not anything that's not for rent (sorry, cc). Streeteasy is a humorless bunch, lest you forgot. I kid, I kid...

"No offense" is like the phrase "with all due respect" or "don't take this the wrong way." It usually is followed by something like "but you're fat." If you are going to insult someone, don't try to couch it with a disingenuous covering phrase. Just do it. (Wait, I've heard that before.)

Spin: Can I recommend Columbia County? It is fabulous and just 2 hrs on a great drive up the Taconic. A town like Hillsdale in beautiful, Copake Lake has much to be desired. Their are great hiking trails, interesting towns, the Berkshires for shopping, dining and movies (20 min away) or Hudson (15 min) for restaurants or river trips. Plus Tanglewood in 40 mins. To me this side of the river is infinitely more interesting -- and beautiful-- than the Woodstock side of the river. If interested, I have a broker for you.
