Apartments sell at 30% off in 2 auctions - 26 units in luxury upper Manhattan condo and 19 in western Queens sold at prices ranging from $211,000 to $601,500; such sales remain relatively rare in NYC. :: http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20110214/REAL_ESTATE/110219939
The Washington Heights building is located too close to the GW Bridge/highway approach. I can easily understand why the developer had to resort to an auction.
Uh, I think the word "luxury" is being a bit misused in this case....
Washington Heights and Western Queens.
"Luxury" Washington Heights? Now that's a good one. Crains should leave satire to The Onion.
But Washington Heights does in fact have luxury pre-war apartments -- just not that building, and not that part of Washington Heights.
So, I guess, there couldn't be any pressing reason for any of the developers of all the other almost empty condo buildings with thousands of units waiting to be sold to resort to such a measure, since those buildings don't have this proximity to the Cross Bronx highway. Those others are doing just fine as is.
I would bet that LIC has the highest concentration of zombie buildings. I was there at night a few weeks ago and right off of Vernon Blvd. saw a tall building with not a single light on.
