Cell phone antenna impact on price

Discussion about
Saw an apartment on 140 east 83rd street. Otherwise nice apartment. There is a cell phone antenna on the adjacent building about 15 feet from the windows of the kitchen and one bedroom. The antenna is about the same level as the apartment. No cement wall between the antenna and the windows. I am worried about the potential health impact, appearances aside but they also may play a role. The stuff I have read about it always assumes that the distance is the height of the tower or that there is cement between the antenna and the living quarters.

And the positive is good cell phone reception, unlike the pricey pads at Time Warner Center--though technology will solve that problem eventually.

This is a good question and one I've wondered about as well. There are consultants out there who can test to measure RF levels. Often a simple adjustment of the antenna itself (a slight turn away from your window, for example) can eliminate any potential health concern.

Iphone stuck to your head all day is probably a larger issue

I think its dependent on whether the antenna is visible or not. If you're buying a top floor apt and have direct eye contact with an cell antenna that's definitely going to bug you for for many reasons. If you can't see it , then out of sight out of mind. Usually cell antennas are done on rental buildings for just this reason, owners of units who live near antennas might not like them(for visual and perceived health reasons).

I thought it was done for the reason of Verizon paying the building to put cell towers on top.

Antennas atop a coop generate revenue for the coop from the lease to the cell company for right to put antenna on roof.

You can line inside of baseball cap with tinfoil and wear it when in apartment. Also put tinfoil on back of window shades.

Correct, but in an owner building you have to deal with angry buyers with lawyers. Its a good way for the building to raise revenue so long as nobody objects..including a pent-house owner living next to the cell tower.

Go ahead, buy the place...you could be making a major contribution to a longitudinal study on the effects of microwave cell towers and human health. Those stories about brain cancer are just that...stories. We are never really going to know what the effects are until brave selfless people like you get out there, buy the apartment and live there.

Thanks in advance for taking one for the team.

ues,
I'd be concerned & it's not clear whether a cement wall would even protect you. Suggest you read "Zapped" for more info:

Off Topic
I wonder if you lived in LIC right close to a cell relay tower if the deleterious effects of the microwave radiation cancel out the deleterious effects of the ground water contaminates. Perhaps the two might act as constructive interference amplifying the effect of both.

When LIC H.S. wins every event in every sport every year you will all be sorry you didn’t buy in when you have the chance. Mutants will rule LIC! (they already rule Williamsburg)

Thanks for the advice. The apartment is not the penthouse but in the adjacent building is the one with the antenna. The adjacent building is lower and the antenna is clearly visible and about the same level as the apartment. Not sure which way the antenna is facing. I will prob let it go I don't want to wear a metal lined baseball cap for the duration.

Who knew the streeteasy population was so into pseudoscience? In addition to not buying this apartment, also do not have your children vaccinated. There is no science behind that either so it must be true.

ues, if you love the apartment you could consider remedies like leaded glass panes in the window and lead-lined sheet rock to cover the wall. Overkill? Probably. But if it brings peace of mind, why not?

They use these products in doctors' offices that have xrays. If they can protect you from the zap of an in-house xray machine, they'll protect you from a few lowly RFs from across the way.

By the way, remember that everyone's getting zapped by all sorts of nasty things just by virtue of living in NYC. There's really no hiding from it :-)

You don't have to wear a baseball cap. Surely you could fashion another style of headwear from a sheet of tin foil. Be creative!

From the Grand Madison thread I posted on and is related to this thread

Went to see PHA a couple weeks ago. Not a bad apartment. Thought the living room should be a bit wider and the upstairs floorplan didn't work too well.
Outdoor space felt boxed like a backyard, more than a terrace.

Most disturbing was what looked to be a cellphone tower at the NW corner of the building.
Which struck me as real odd being one of the shorter buildings on the block.
Anyway, prefer laying out to sun rays vs micro rays. There's just less cancer in it."

Don't know impact on price but can tell you there is an impact on buyer pool size when you go to resell.
I won't even consider a northern end apartment in the Grand Mad, not even for $500 per sq ft.
THere may be no risk but I don't beleive it. I don't think Im alone either, whether it's real or paranoia.

Well, someone's decided to take the risk... PHA just went into contract.

Bstar
I was about to say, "it's been in contract for a while" 'til I looked at the history... it's in contract again.

12/22/2010Listing entered contract.
01/24/2011Re-listed by Brown Harris Stevens.
02/22/2011Listing entered contract.

"Well, someone's decided to take the risk"
True, we can also speculate 12/22 just noticed the risk, 2/22 hasn't seen it yet either. ;)

Seriously of course, some will not care, probably more than do but I don't think it's a factor to ignore.
I thought I was the type that did not care until I could practically read serial numbers on the equipment from the deck.

Yeah, if you're reading serial numbers it's definitely pretty darn close. Across the street--eh. In back yard? Makes you go hmm.

Everyone so far has focused on the health impact, but on top of that, it sounds like a huge eyesore! There's no shortage of good apartments out there, find one you love.

Huge eyesore too.
BTW got my kids vaccinated.
Don't believe in voodoo medicine.
Do believe all the recent data regarding CT scans. Ordered all the time, now new studies documenting increased cancer risk b/c they are a lot of radiation.
