Discussion about
I have 3 oriental rugs - 12 by 12 large living room rug and then 2 runners 2 by 12......got a quote from a place in long island for cleaning - ie 550 to clean all 3 and 200 for pickup and delivery.....this sounds really high to me.....thoughts? referrals to cheaper and reliable? Thanks
Are you specifically looking for an "Oriental" Rug Cleaner...because I know a Mexican that can do it for a good price
Good one, AB. Racism is always good for a laugh.
At least AB didn't make any toupée jokes, right?
The yelpers love http://www.yelp.com/biz/steam-pro-carpet-cleaners-woodside ... click through to their website and you'll find a link for "area rugs", in which Oriental rugs are discussed. I'd have a bit of an interview with them to find out if they use the same methods that would be used for the most valuable rugs.
ooops....my topic did not appear as i wished....
Thanks Alan.......does anyone else have experience with pricing......750 seems high to me...
Okay...don't laugh at this but it is a trick i learned years ago from my grandmother. Take a large container of table salt and sprinkle LIBERALLY over the entire rug. Let it sit for an hour or two and then vacuum thoroughly. You will be amazed at how crisp and clean they will look. Then go to dinner with the money you saved...
Thanks...the yelpers recommendation was more expensive than what i foound.....guess its just COSTLY!
Rosina....dinner??...i could go to europe with the savings....!
Well, you know: reduce, recycle, replace. That means get rid of those rugs, give them away, and buy new ones at Ikea. Repeat every 3 years when they're in need of "cleaning".
Also known as "cleanse, don't clean".
oriental rugs arent 'throw aways'....pretty expensive
Yes, apparently they are!
Alanhart.....not understanding why apparently they are...ie just because they should be cleaned?
Because they have expensive taste in cleaning ... high-maintenance, as they say.
I used to have a beautiful Karastan rug from Persia (when it was still Persia) ... bye-bye. Cleanse, don't clean.
ive used these guys a few times in the past. they did a GREAT job cleaning my rugs, and the rate was very competitive. they didnt charge for the picking up or delivery of rugs. a friend had recommended them to me
hope this helps

I just had two rugs cleaned with ABC Carpet. Not sure how their prices will compare to your other quote (largely depends on whether your carpets are handmade or machine made), but I found them to be very professional, punctual, and flexible with pick-up/drop off. Their delivery charge was a flat $10. They did a great cleaning job. I don't think they're the cheapest game in town, but overall I am very pleased and would use them again.
thanks.....i called oriental rugs earlier...more expensive than what i originally posted.....so im just sticking to what i got......seems its just expensive to clean these rugs....im sure abc will be about the same
Why don't you at least try rosina's method? I really don't think Persians used to have their rugs picked up and taken to a cleaning factory, and I'm sure they kept their rugs clean somehow.
chelapt...I have an oriental in the kitchen of the SC home directly between the sink and the stove. Not an ideal place because of the exposure to food spills, water etc but better than sticking it in the attic as it is really a lovely piece and i couldn't use it elsewhere. Naturally this rug needs far more care than the other orientals i have in the house but i use the salt method every few months and it looks fabulous still after seven years there. Try it on one of your runners and see what you think and then you can take alanhart to dinner.

I object to this post.
I believe that WASP's, Native Americans, Blacks, Hispanics and all other races are perfectly capable of cleaning a rug.
Per rosina:
"I have an oriental in the kitchen of the SC home directly between the sink and the stove"
I hope you are treating them properly and declaring them on your income taxes.
aptboy...ablsolutely since three of them are my grandchildren!
