Discussion about
OK Sherlocks, game on. The author of this article went out of his way to provide ample clues as to the whereabouts of the building with the secret loos. Sounds more like urban myth. Would love to learn more. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/20/magazine/mag-20KeyScofflaw-t.html?_r=1&ref=magazine "It’s the summer of 2008. Obviously Williamsburgh ... the bathroom was originally designed as part of the adjacent apartment, but that one was bought by hipsters, who don't bathe or shave and thus had no need for it.

But wouldn't the hipsters just turn it into a gas pipe sculpture design studio or whatever else it is they hawk at Brooklyn flea?

Actually, in a building in Tribeca, the developer put in steel beams in an area which, by FAR, had to be enclosed in sheetrock. Allowed for an additonal room, with total safety. Perfect room size, or, possibly huge bathroom or small bedroom. Not on the condo declaration, but I know that it has been used by original purchasers.

Per the city, if the loft had a bathroom, it'd be a bedroom. But other considerations would prevent it being a bedroom, so no bathroom allowed.

You see this more often with ground-floor apartments having a cellar "recreation room" with a half-bath. It has to be half, not full, since the cellar can't be a bedroom. All of those half-baths, though, have plenty of adjacent room for a shower or tub.

Look at the fifth-floor apartments at http://9inetyn5th.com. The second bedrooms are windowless, so aren't bedrooms, so the second bath is only half.

Here's a contender for the hidden bathroom: http://www.padcondos.com/

See the voids and huge "mechanical rooms" in the mezzanine plans for 4A, B and C.

90 N5th. Second Bedrooms have skylights. The layout isn't accurate. Full closet in those bedrooms.

"Obviously Williamsburgh"

Is that where they install the Fourmica, Alan?

The Pad looks like a solid contender NWT. But after reading some of the old posts and articles I got to wondering how much of a windfall that extra bath really was.
