Discussion about
I'd like to install 5/8" wood floor on a 11' high wall. Basically the wall is comprised on standard sheetrock on metal joists. I was hoping to save space in the apartment and glue the wood flooring to the sheetrock, but my contractor is recommending 3/4" plywood underneath, and then nailing the wood floor to the plywood on the wall. This will obviously take up a lot more space in the apartment, and I am wondering if it is necessary. How about using 1/4" plywood and gluing the flooring to that? Or simply glueing the flooring to the sheetrock? The best method is one that conserves space but also ensures that the wood wall is sturdy. Thanks.
I would install the plywood and I would use glue and nails. You do have a weight factor and wood does shrink and expand if you just glue it you Re asking for trouble.
Primer, I'm surprised a contractor is entertaining the idea of installing flooring as wall paneling. How do you refinish this? Why make the room narrower and shorter by six inches? Well if you instal the floor boards on a diagonal, it would be very retro 70s
I don't get how a wall 3/4" thicker would take a lot of space. If you were building a wood-panelled wall you'd have furring or something between the wood and the sheetrock, so same difference.
If you or a subsequent owner attaches anything to that wall, what Primer05 said is especially true. Just glueing and screwing to sheetrock isn't going to cut it.
PMG,
It might not be the contractor who wants to install the wood. Sometimes we just have to do what the client wants. I have told clients I thought some ideas were not that great painting a 5,000 sq ft apt in canary yellow, every inch of the place but yet thats exactly what we did.
