Discussion about
My niece has been in her apartment for almost 2 months and ConEd keeps canceling her appointment to get service.. However, for the past 2 months her electric/gas/heat etc has been working perfectly fine... We know at closing, the seller shut everything off and took his name off utilities... How does her electric work if the current utilities are under no one's name?

I am going to guess they will send a bill to the address where service is being provided, and your niece will pay it.. right?

Why is an appointment needed anyway?

In most older buildings, believe it or not, ConEd never bothers to *shut off* the electricity. The juice keeps flowing even if no one new is on the bill.

I have no problem if they send a bill to her..

"Why is an appointment needed anyway" It sounds like they just need to check the meter in her apt prior to setting up the account..

It's just kind of amazing that they possibly don't even keep track? Sounds like a little experiment.

I've always just notified them when I move in a place/take ownership and they send bills. There isn't "an appointment" that I've ever had for this.

I think this probably refers to gas service, not electricity ... some buildings still have gas meters in the individual apartments, not clustered.

there is no appointment, it's a billing/record change. they'll credit the previous owner/renter and debit your rel and don't write back in a few weeks/months and complain.

All she needs to do is call ConEd and have the account changed to her name. That's it. No appointment is necessary. But do it immediately--they will, eventually, shut off the electric--sounds like you're on borrowed time now. Once that happens it becomes more of a PITA.
